My boss tried to install SP2 on his home computer. He said he got half-way through SP2 installinf and he got a blue screen error. He rebooted and got the same error.....

STOP: C0000135 Unable to locate WINSRV

Anyone know why he got this error? I almost forgot, now windows will not boot up at all.

    Hi kman :)
The stop error 0xc0000135 typically occurs when the registry has been damaged by some software program that has improperly "fixed" the registry - often either a registry "tweeker" or "cleaner". Registry damage often occurs when programs with access to the registry do not cleanly remove temporary items that they store in the registry. It can also occur if one of these programs is improperly terminated with one or more registry changes improperly or incompletely stored in the registry. The result is can be unpredictable, depending on what part of the registry has been damaged. But in all cases this stop occurs when Windows, attempting to boot, is unable to read one or more critical parts of the registry, Now you may be able to fix this error like this. Firstly uninstall the service pack. Then put your windows CD disk into your drive. Then type in the command in the run box sfc /scannow your hard drive will now be examined and any file that may be damaged will be replaced. When completed disable everything at start up by typing in the run box MSCONFIG And disabling every thing at start up reboot the computer and now install SP2. You will find it will now install correctly. Do try in future to use a good registry cleaner such as Reg Supreme Professional which will avoid these things happening in future

    Regards

Look here, STOP: C0000135 Unable to locate WINSRV

Sounds like he may have to use the Recovery Console method. Also, I have a more detailed instruction method that Microsoft XP SP2 support sends people who are requesting help. It is kind of long but goes further in detail about how and what to do if you still want to install SP2.

That stop error is being looked at very closely by MS right now.

Its the number 1 SP2 related stop error we are seeing.

I am really stuck and disappointed; loaded SP2, getting error C0000135, winsrv not found. My problem is trying to get past the admin password, if I have one I don't know it. I have spoken to Dell and Microsoft  no help at all. Does anyone know how to get past this password? The only other alternative they tell me is the formatt drive, and I am not willing to do that yet. Please help (do I sound desperate?)
