I had to do a compete reformate for my computer. I installed service pack 2 and McAfee Internet Suite 2005 yesterday. While online the McAfee Icon in the taskbar went black then disappeared while I did nothing to McAfee. I went offline and turned off my computer. Upon trying to go back online I found that Internet Explorer will not operate.

I have tried disabling McAfee and SP2 Windows firewall. I have installed the Internet Explorer Service Pack 2 updates. So far nothing has worked.

I am however able to use Microsoft Outlook to send and receive email. I have run all the virus scans but nothing was detected.

The operating system is Windows XP Home Edition. Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to MajorGeeks :)

I find it strange that Internet Explorer won't work, but Outlook Express will. Both use the same IP address and settings, or so I believe, and for one to work and the other not, tends to make me believe that there is a firewall setting blocking IE. Please check your SP2 firewall again to make sure that it is disabled, as I have found that some updates will enable it without asking you.
I noticed that you said McAffee suite, so I'm assuming that means antivirus, firewall, etc. I honestly don't believe that this is a fault of SP2. If you have a few minutes to kill until a more experienced member jumps in with more helpfull advice and can fix your problem, please do the following. Go to the downloads section of MajorGeeks and download Avast from the antivirus section, and Sygate from the firewall section. After sucessfully downloading both of these, go offline, if you have a cable connection unplug the modem to prevent getting infected. Uninstall everything from the McAffee suite and reboot. Install Avast and Sygate, ignore the windows asking you to register for the present time, shut the computer down, and reboot with your modem plugged in, if on cable, and see if IE works then. If so, then we can say that McAffee was the problem, or a setting in the program itself. and will have to work on that. Hope this helps.

Try replacing the file C:\windows\system\oleaut32.dll with the one from your original windows disk. I had a problem with windows not opening after I installed SP2 and had to replace this file with the original for things to work right. Hope this helps.

Well to be honest SP2 is terrible !
The additional stuff it gives you can be a pain.
If you use software not in the microcrap empire you will be safer and your PC will run far better.
I have just renewed my windows XP disc and that stupid SP2 is embeded in it.
    This is a pain...AHHHHHHHH
I recomend you use a good pop up blocker, maybe Avast anti virus, pest patrol to handle spyware/adware and zone alarm pro as a firewall ( Some do not like ZA pro ) I find it great.
Also I would advice using Firefox as a browser and dump IE.
This way you have control .

SP2 is a must. If fixes so many things and adds security that users don't see upfront plus better wi-fi support. If you don't like the security center, then just disable it. I see no reason for people to not upgrade unless they have software that is not yet compatible.

Or unless that person is dumb and doesn't take the time to properly prepare for SP2 install, which 90 percent of the time th eproblems are caused by spyware and or virus installed before the service pack 2 update.

No it's not.because it's creating problem more then fixing it.....

All the poeple who i know who install SP2 they have come back to service
    pack 1.

    That's 20/20

Just because it is the latest thing it is better...

And for adware and spyware if you uses IE just disable active X.

No, its not. What you see is such a small picture.

Now that people are wising up to viruses and spyware, we don't have near the call volume we did on it.

In fact, its slow at work!

I'm with adryn... man.. it has fixed more than broke and prevented much more. Try working in volume and not just a handful of people that you know.
