Service pack 3

When I download Service pack 3 it downloads and then gets about half way through installing and says 'Control ID not found'.

Strange?

 

I have Trend Micro Virus Checker, so whats the problem?

 

Tried with Virus checkers turned off and worked.

The problem is that the service pack is creating a lot of files on the filesystem at once, and the AV program wants to grab them all, lock them, and scan them. The installer will only wait a certain amount of time before timing out if it is unable to read a file from the filesystem (it can't tell if the file is locked by another process or otherwise legitimately inaccessible).

This creates a race condition where the anti-virus program can cause large update installations to fail. This is common on any Service Pack or any other update over roughly 50MB in size, although the larger the update and the slower the computer the higher the risk of triggering this race condition fault. The .NET Framework 1.0/1.1 was notorious for triggering this error at one point.
