Ok looked through the threads and couldn't get the answer I need so I'm posting (obviously). From what I mostly gatherd this is a personal preference thing to download but I would like to know if it is beneficial to the os or if it is more problematic than than its worth?

    Hi

I would say that all Service Packs are beneficial to the OS otherwise they would not be developed, SP3 for XP does add some new things ( nothing earth shattering ) and will in many cases add more stability and compatability with the likes of wifi, some new networking tools etc You will always hear the negative side of software on forums and the internet as folk dont really post the positive sucesses, but decision to install is yours but personally I always update.

    Doc on whats new http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ad-bc34-40be-8d85-6bb4f56f5110&displaylang=en

Some release notes well worth reading http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/d/8/cd8cc719-7d5a-40d3-a802-e4057aa8c631/relnotes.htm

But I would advise scanning your PC for malware, disabling your AV and backing up all important docs before installing ( these are what I would call normal install rules for any service pack install and not just for XP SP3 )

If your PC is an OEM one them it maybe subject to the issue of having an Intel driver file on it when its an AMD CPU, so this is work around for that issue http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jes...ed-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx

Thanks halo for the input and after reading the links you posted it seems like a lot to do just to install. Decisions on if one wants to remove IE7 at a later date should first download SP3 B4 having IE7 and it goes on as I'm assuming you know already. At least I got some more knowledge on making up my mind to install or not which was what I was wanting. Never fear knowledge (just fear the work that it may take to obtain it) !!!!

I also suggest you make an image before you install SP3. If you are one of the unlucky people who end up with a BSOD or an endless reboot, you will be glad you have an image to restore the computer from.
