I was trying to eliminate the last remanants of Zone Alarm. I went to Control Panel: Administrative Tools: Component Services. I clicked on Component Services. then opposite the + sign clicked on Component Services again. A file labored Computer appeared and I clicked on that. A message appeared that said somehting like "for you security Windows has blocked this service", ( I can not rememeber what it said exactly) It asked me I wanted to unblock it and I said yes. I assumed that would default to blocked but it has not. How to block it again?

Hi TM711, it would help a great deal, to know more about your system... What OS are you using? (XP , Vista?), what SP, browser, etc... ;)

    Using XP Home Edition.

Do you have SP2 or 3? Also, it sure would help to know what that box said you clicked onto ... I am finding a LOT, but which one you unblocked, I am still trying to find it...

You might be better off going to the Malware section, and follow the instructions included here: READ & RUN ME FIRST.

I don't know what you clicked, or how to undo it, so maybe one of the Malware experts will be able to help you... There must have been a reason to unblock what you did... I am sure they will have an answer for you... ;)

    Hello tm711, disreguard my last post for now;

I used your steps and was able to navigate "way past" what you did..
and never got any warning about something being blocked! I don't know if something changed your permissions or not. And - you didn't say whether or not you was using an Administrator's Account, or if your system files are set
as Hidden -- I don't know if that has one thing to do with what you were trying to accomplish.

You may want to use this tool in this thread. Go to Post #3

    http://forums.zonealarm.com/showthread.php?t=70034

Be sure to post back, and let me know how it goes, if your problem is fixed or it isn't, and we will take it from there......

This is what I did originally: http://www.digitalspy.biz/forums/showthread.php?p=28157427 (post number7).
I started out by googleing and found many referneces to the ZA removal tool.
I never could find a link to the ZA removal tool that worked, so I did what is described in post # 7. The unblocking occured while I was in AdminServices. I was not using administrator privilieges at the time; I was logged on as a user. I have all the service packs and updates.

I have Winpatrol, SAS, Avira, and Spybot. I wonder if they put up a block? I am going to take a look today and see if I find anything in them.

    Hi

Spybot would be my first choice at causing any block as its teatimer option can block registry entries from being installed or uninstalled.

I don't use tea timer. I checked in Spybot and all the other security programs and nothing seemed relevant.

    Perhaps this caused the alert:

dr.moriarity- thanks- that was my 1st thought. But I cannot find anyplace in Winpatrol where there is such a setting. Also, the message (I'm pretty sure ) referred to windows.

Hi tm711, sounds to me, like you were trying to remove Zone Alarm, is that correct? Do you still have Zone Alarm on your system? If you were trying to remove, it, have you tried ccleaner? :confused

ZA seems to be gone. The steps I performed in post#7 seem to have worked.

The question is why did I get that blocking message and why dont I get it now?

    I just noticed something -

    1 control Panel/ Admin tools/ Component services/
2 click + at Component Services
    3 click + at Computers
    4 Rt click Properties
at Open access permission what would good security be?

Also, just after step 3 above
    RT click my computer
    What does "Stop MSDTC" mean?

Dunno even if this is a problem -now I'm just being nosy:-D

Some of the stuff I found while googleing seems to say that I don't even need this - does that make sense? If so how do I disable it?

Hi tm711, to answer your question,

That stands for: MicroSoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator service

Now, I don't' think you want to "stop" that, and have to manually do all the computer stuff your computer does with Microsoft... Manually.......That should be left AS IS.... If you stop it, you will just have to start it again, when you are NOT getting any updates etc.... It communicates with Microsoft about what YOUR computer needs....

Also, I don't think googling all your computers info is going to help you, just give you more questions... If you listen to everything Google says, you might just stop everything on your system rolleyes

Did you want ZoneAlarm gone, or was that by accident? I am getting :confused now... If it was by accident, you may want that back on as well... Do let us know what you were trying to do....

MSDTC service is amongst the first group of services I disable on my PC's, from pre-release XP through Vista and currently build 7100 of Windows 7.

It would not be something I'd disable on a large network, however.

For information on Windows XP services, see BlackViper - read it very carefully - disabling services can lead to no Windows ...

Well, tm711, you can do as you like, but I wouldn't disable it, and here is some more detailed info on MSDTC you might be interested in:

    • The Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) service is a component of modern versions of Microsoft Windows that is responsible for coordinating transactions that span multiple resource managers, such as databases, message queues, and file systems.

    • MSDTC is included in Windows 2000 and later operating systems, and is also available for Windows NT 4.0.

    • MSDTC performs the transaction coordination role for components, usually with COM and .NET architectures.

    • In MSDTC terminology, the director is called the transaction manager.

I've emboldened a few phrases to point out that MSDTC is basically used for server-client database use.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms679938%28VS.85,loband%29.aspx
When a transaction updates data on more than one networked computer, it is called a distributed transaction.

    http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/sql-server/what-exactly-is-msdtc-any-when-do-i-need-it/
The majority of home users do not need to use MSDTC.

Website and software developers may need to use it and some software may not install or function correctly if MSDTC is disabled.
