services list?

Can anyone give me a good link to a services list, so that I can stop the ones that are eating up my system? I am having some issues with my windows opening slowly, and the cdrom peaking my cpu usage. I uninstalled Microsoft antispyware and that seemed to help. Recently downloaded NET 2.0, could that be causing any problems like this? Thanks for the help!

Blackviper is another, but I don't reccomend that site due to errors I found.

 

The help is much appreciated. I have determined that the issue is the wonderful Internet Security package given to me. Norton's. I am going to load another one from this site and order BlackIce. I should have known better than to think that Nortons would not try to use up my cpu more than windows does. Thanks again!

Blackice doesn;t have the best rep...I'd reccomend Sygate, which you can download here.

 

BlackIce is a decent firewall...but it gives some falsepostives on detecting trojan, spyware etc... connections when you are surfing the internet and it doesnt seem to be a novice firewall to setup... Id recommend a different firewall like Sygate or Zone Alarm.

 

I appreciate the information. I tried Sygate and it stopped responding when I clicked on the security tab. Call me funny but I did not feel very secure. I have used Zone Alarm in the past. Are there any sites that explain how to set it up properly? No laughing at my newbieease. I am trying to cure myself. Thanks for the help all.

 

Blackice isn't that decent when it's compared to ZoneAlarm or Outpost.

Considering they all make free versions, I don't know why anyone would choose Blackice?

 

I don't know how basic a setup tutorial you want, but HERE is one, and ZoneAlarm comes with a pretty good help file and can configure itself.

 

Blackice was the first firewall and anti-virus I ever used, back in 2000, and I really liked it at the time. I do like the freeware though, so much so that I make it a point to crash my system at least twice a week because I have too many things running and conflicts occur. Yet I am learning.
