Services won't start

XP Home, SP2.

Cannot start several services.

Background info- Cannot update Windows using the Windows Update site. Did a search and found a thread in which SPD says to start the BITS. It's startup type is listed as Automatic, but it is Stopped. When I attempt to start it, the following message appears: Error 1803. The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service.

I get a similar error when attempting to start other services.
