I have a new computer and am having trouble setting some things up as I don't understand the terms.

Under "Set Network Location", I don't know which to chose...
    Home/Work/Public
I use the desktop computer at home, no other computers in the home.
I thought I was to choose "home network" because I use the computer at home, but I came across something where I think it says I should set it as "Public" so I'm not sharing anything????

I'm so confused with the techy words, will you be able to help me sort this out?
    Home or Public?
    Thanks!
    :-o
I came across a "workgroup" name too... I don't understand what I'm doing.
    :cry

Set it to "Home Network" Public is just that. When you go out in the public with your laptop, etc.

When I clicked on "help me chose", there was a note...
"If you know you won’t need to share files or printers, the safest choice is public network."

This is what has me all flustered, oy.
I don't want to share anything from my computer, just basic use for me, surfing, e-mail, yadda, yadda.

    Thanks
I guess I make things difficult for myself, lol.

Windows 7 is different than XP and Vista. For one computer your safest choice is: Public. Public turns off network discovery, disables file and print sharing and if you have any shared/public folders, if anyone wants acess they will have to type in a valid name and password.

Work and Home are almost the same in Win 7. Home has one more feature, it will look for any other Win 7 computers in your 'homegroup" so that sharing is easy.
This "homegroup" sharing is unique to Win 7.

Ok, I think the wording is what got me confuzzled, lol.
    Thank you for your explanation.

    Just to confirm...
I have one computer being used at home. I should set my computer to "Public" which disables sharing to strangers.
    Yes? lol

    Yes, that is correct.

BTW, the "workgroup" option is just to use in a multi-computer environment when there is no domain, like at home with multiple computers or a small office. You don't need to change the setting as you are not sharing files.
