Can someone provide information on how to set a password for a hidden share on an network domain NT Server?

We will be disconnecting an old server and moving all company licensed software onto another server. i would like to password protect this share to prevent users from accessing it or burning copies for home use. I want to provide the password to the administrators who will be installing the software when needed.

Is there a way to setup a password when trying to connect using START/RUN then typing the \\Server_Name\Share$ (then asks for password).

Security for this hidden share folder should be accessed from any client computer but must provide a password to access this folder.

    Thanks.

hidden shares are only for administrators. Unless you login with the admin account to your machine (for passthrough authentication), when you try to connect to it using any other user (non-admin) credentials, you should automatically get a login prompt.

I can access this share from any client computer. I would like for anyone to be able to connect but only access it if the correct password is supplied.

I want the client computers to be able to connect in case an actual administrator is sitting behind their computer to install a program. They can supply the password with the current logged on users account.

if your account has administrator privileges on the server you're loggin into, then you will not recieve a login prompt. Trust me. In order to have the prompt pop up on a hidden share, there must be credential mismatches.

    For instance:
I use my workstation and login with the credentials
    User: BOB
    Pass: 123

and on the server my BOB account has admin privies and the account there matches my workstation credentials then the credentials will pass-through and I can access the hidden share.

If, however, the my credentials on the server are different:
    User: BOB
    Pass: 456

Then I will get a login prompt in which I need to provide the proper account information.

You cannot add/modify the default hidden share permissions. ONLY the administrators group has access to this.
