    HI
Have had sun java running with Windows 98 for sometime, but recently it is disabled. This may have followed a windows update. Message says it is not the default for the browser. How do i make it the default again? I have confirmed that I have the most up to date version on the sun java website.

Click start, settings, control panel, double click on Java, then click the Advanced tab, then click on the plus (+) next to <APPLET> tag support.

Check the boxes for the browser you wish to use.

For mine I have IE checked. I need to figure out how to have mozilla/netscape checked, since I'm running Mozilla Minefield (build 2006041304). Waiting on the trunk build to be released.......

    Edit:

I guess I do not need to worry about it:

I had already done that. It is set to IE as it has always been.

Have also checked the options under Internet Options/Advanced.

Under Sun Java i have use JRE 1.5.0_06 checked and under Microsoft VM i just have JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled.

    It still doesn't work.

Now I have looked back I can see that I installed security updates for Windows 98 and for Microsoft VM on 1st April. Could this be the reason my Sun Java doesn't work?

I uninstalled the updates but to no avail. Should i uninstall Java, update windows and reinstall? Can anyone help?

You can easily alternate between the Sun Java Virtual Machine and the Microsoft Virtual Machine. The Sun JVM can be enabled and disabled without having to uninstall it. Switching back and forth between these Virtual Machines can be done through the Advanced tab in your Windows Internet Options Control Panel, OR by using the Java Control Panel. [Note: It's probably a good idea to check both places]. Instructions as to how to accomplish this are listed below.

To enable Sun Java Virtual Machine as the default JVM, refer to this link:
Switching between the Microsoft VM and the Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

For additional troubleshooting instructions regarding enabling the Sun Java Runtime Environment JRE for the browser, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla, or Netscape, go to:
Enable Java Runtime Environment 5.0 through the Control Panel
Enable Java Runtime Environment 5.0 through your Web browser

This problem can also be caused by a "proxy" configuration problem:
Configuring proxy settings for Java Runtime Environment 5.0

If none of these options work; you might try to:
Uninstall the Sun JVM and then REBOOT Windows and Install Java Virtual Machine again.

    Good Luck!

I would UNCHECK anything Microsoft VM and try uninstalling and reinstalling SUN...you don't need the MS Jit Compiler if you have Sun Java as default.

I don't think Microsoft VM is worth a toot...just MY opinion.

Thanks for advice... still stuck. I uninstalled and reinstalled java2 to no avail. Uninstallled it again and used the link to install Java Virtual Machine and got java2 installed again!

Any more advice (apart from buying a new computer!). Have been looking at my system restore disc all afternoon wondering whether to use it!

Having read your post, the advice given and tried, and the results thereof, have you noticed whether or not your version of Win98 is supported in the latest version of Java. I believe that the newest version is only supported on Win98SE or later versions. Hope this helps!:)

NOT the latest version of Java

    http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
    Platform(s):
    Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (SP4+), Windows XP (SP1 SP2), Windows 2003
This is the latest Java version: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6
After you uminstall Java, do a cleanup with CCleaner, if you have it and if you don't you can get it HERE:
    CCleaner 1.28.277 http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191
    Try the Windows (Offline Installation)
Read the "Instructions" and after Installation go back and TEST the installation
That's all I can think of

    Well thanks for advice.... sadly....
Novice i tried reverting my hard drive to this morning and only uninstalled Update 6 of Sun Java but to no avail..

Toni, uninstalled Sun Java, ran CCleaner and installed via the manual download as advised. When i verify the installation with Sun Java website it still says i have the latest version.

    Any other ideas?

    So what is happening now?
    Are applets not working?
    What's not working now?

All that happens is that if you open a chat room page for example it is blank, with no message, and a little icon top left corner consisting of a red square, a green circle and a blue triangle. When i click on "tools" and then "sun java console" it says "sun java is not currently selected as the default Java for the browser. Go to tools/internet options... etc," but i have the sun Java box checked, all the Microsoft VM boxes unchecked and the "enable applet" button checked in security. Also the applet box is checked on the Java console via the control panel.

I just have no answer for you after all you've tried.
If you have it set as Default but are being "told" it's NOT.....I'm lost.
Hopefully someone will have something else you could try....sorry I wasn't able to get it resolved for ya.
