Setting Up a Secondary Disk Drive

I need some help and advice on setting up a secondary hard disk presenting an uncommon problem in an old computer, my prized Compaq Presario S5160UK, still going.

Internally it has only IDE/PATA connections/disk controllers. I have at present one hard disk in the computer. It is connected to the end of an IDE cable, leaving a 'spare' connector in the 'middle' of the cable.

I also have SATA disks, which I can get significantly for significantly less $$$.
So I bought an IDE<->SATA adapter. I tried it out on the spare connector on the IDE cable with a SATA disk. It recognised the (empty) SATA disk, a step in the right direction. But when it was connected up, I could never see my system disk, it was just not there (I had booted from a CD). I had read about using a jumper to connect CS option, but I was unable to try that because the IDE side of my adapter does not have the 8 pin connector block where the CS pins can be found on an IDE-type disk.

Can anyone advise on connecting a SATA disk to an IDE system in a similar fashion to this ?

Set your main drive as cable select. If it is already set that way, set it as the master.

Keep in mind the IDE cable must support it too. Set the black connector (one on the end probably) to the master, and the grey one (in the middle to the slave). If you are using an IDE cable with multiple drives, with an adaptor or not, you must setup a master/slave system.

Thanks for your advice, I've now found the manual for my system disk (ST380011A) which describes the jumpering arrangement (master). As it says no jumpers needed for slave, I hope that's what the (adapter+SATA disk) represent. (I am still confused by one or two small points, but I think they are minor). Now to get jumpers.

Let me know how it goes. Usually you don't use SATA and IDE together like this, because each SATA device is designed to be its own master. It could be the sata drive is trying to be master while the system drive is doing the same. You don't want your system drive to be a slave.

What adapter did you get? Something like this http://www.cooldrives.com/index.php/sahadradtoid.html? (it has a jumper to set master/slave?)
If the mobo has 2 IDE connectors get this adapter
    http://www.microcenter.com/product/312310/Single_Port_SATA_to_IDE_Converter
    http://www.microcenter.com/product/312311/Dual_Port_SATA_to_IDE_Converter

You can get a single or dual port, I have the dual port, future expansion. I've even used this in a Win 98se system.
Assuming you have a single IDE CD-ROM and a single IDE/PATA Hard drive installed, move them to one cable. Make the HHD master & CD-ROM as slave on one IDE, convert the other to say a dual SATA so you can 'modernize' your hardware.
