Can anyone tell me how to set up dual channel memory?
I know it involves the memory modules in ure dimm slots, but apparently according to everest I should be getting almost twice the mb/s than Im getting now.
This is what I get now:
-about 3000mb/s read speed, using 768mb of pc3200 ddr sdram

At the top of everest as an example benchmark, is my same processor, an athlon 3500+ but with dual pc ddr ram. The read speed is 6000mb/s?

Ive noticed that my system has ddr sdram, not ddr ram-whats the difference?

Any help would be great, I think Im buying another gb of ram next month so maybe that will increase the memory performance?

What motherboard do you have? Setting up a dual channel depends on what board and socket type you have ... it should say how in the maunal, usually just by putting them in the correct spot

all DDR 'RAM' is DDR-SDRAM. so don't worry there. Also, as Pyrate said, your RAM will run in dual channel mode if your motherboard supports it, and you have them in the correct DIMM slots. (1 stick in each channel, varies by motherboard-- usually slot 1&3 or 1&2)

also keep in mind that you'd be lucky to get anywhere near the scores of synthetic benchmarks. Some other things to consider are your RAM timings

I don't know why I didn't see this before ... but you have 768MBs of RAM ... which means you don't have an identical pair of RAM sticks ... it is preferred if you buy a dual channel kit because then it's pretty garanteed to run in dual channel mode(assuming they're in the right DIMM slot)

a pairs of Ram kits putting in dual DDR slot ram that support for it .

I have an asus a8n-e using the n-force 4 ultra chipset.
Theres 4 dimm slots, but Im not sure which ones to use to get dual channel. Why would I have to use 2 modules that are the same size?
I'll have a look in my mb manual!

Well, acording to Asus, your board does support "dual-channel un-buffered DDR400 memory support."

So, the next big question is this. List your memory modules for us. As in Speed and memory size.

    256 DDR 400

Sounds like to me you have 3x256 DDR 400. But, I could be wrong, you may have 1x512 and 1x256....

You can see it in User guide
I think a pair of Blue slot support for Dual.

"Why would I have to use 2 modules that are the same size?"

Because you get the best results. Some motherboards are picky about trying to run RAM in dual channel. Some motherboards require identical modules. But most just require same size modules. It is recommended to buy a dual-channel kit so that they are guaranteed to work together, and you get the best results.

    Right then...
I have a 512mb pc 3200 ddr sdram module (wintec Infineon)
A 256mb pc 3200 ddr sdram module (Micron Tech)
The real clock says 200mhz ddr but effective clock is 400mhz.

I was thinking of buy 2x1gb of corsair ram which I would put into A1 and A2 in my motherboard. This would be dual channel right? Or would dual channel be 2x1gb of corsair ram in B1 and B2 aswell?

if you are not sure set it up to A1 A2 then B1 B2 you will see a mesage on screen info your ram run at Dual or not after power button is press for a while .

In my mb manual it says A1+A2=B1+B2
Is this absoulutely how it has to work?
If i get 2x1gb and put it into A1 and A2 then thatll still leave me with my old ram modules in B1 and B2. If i scrapped the 256mb module and got another 512mb wintec module then would this work as dual channel memory?

    So: 1gb+1gb=512+512?

if it were me I'd just buy the 2x1GB and scrap both of your RAM sticks .. as 2GBs is more than enough for anyone .. at least for now

    I agree with Pyrate...

I also agree, but if it were me, I'd max out my memory. No more upgrading on my 32bit OS, memory wise.

256+512 not a dual chanel, they must be a pair of ram (Dual Kit of ram)
