Setting up firewall with D-link wireless router

I want to set up a firewall with my d-link, but I can't figure it out. I am used to using NOrton Firewall that alerts me when a new program wants to access the internet or when someone trys to connect to mine. This is nice, because I can chose which ones I want to allow through a simple menu.

With the d-link it only allows me to chose IP ranges and name them, but not specific programs or ports. Not sure where to go from here. Does it automatically act as a firewall - hiding my CP from the internet, and only showing the IP of the router? IF not what do I do? I know how to access the manager and get to the firewall options, and I have read the manual and FAQ a few times, but it doesn't give adaquit information for a noob in wireless routers.

    Thanks for your time.

Typically in home routers like the D-link wireless router the firewall only acts to block inbound access to your computer. For example it blocks access to your computer from a computer on the internet. Outbound access is not blocked. So if you have a program on your computer that wants to access the internet, the router will not stop it or even alert you.

To get outbound protection, you will need a software firewall like Norton.

    Just FYI.

The firewall on the D-Link router is enabled by default. You shouldn't have to change anything. Unless you want to open ports for BitTorrent, a VPN, etc., that is.

Telling Norton that only certain programs can access the internet isn't any safer than using the D-Link router's built-in firewall. If you want to use the two in conjunction, go ahead. It may cause more headaches than what it's worth.

One thing you may want to do in your router configuration is enable discard ping from WAN. This option is found in Tools --> Misc.
