Hoping some folks will chime in with some good info on exactly what they check (tick) in their FF browser Options > Privacy > Private Data > Settings.

There are eight (8) boxes/options/setting there (FF 3.0), and I have selected "Saved Passwords" to clear (unfortunately) each time I close the browser, and usually keep several others selected to be cleared when closing my browsers, but am not sure if I need to, or exactly what I should and shouldn't be concerned about here.

I understand about cookies (basically), and have those set-up in different tabs and in CCleaner, but just not sure about things such as Browsing History, Download History, Saved Form/Search, Cache, Authenticated Sessions, etc., and I think there is a new one there, "Offline Website Data". How do you all have these set-up please?

    Thanks ...

    Hi grc

I have mine set as below.

I tend to not have passwords saved as I just follow same principles at home as I use in work, that storing passwords, which essentially allow anyone what access to your PC to logon to any site you save passwords for, so not IMO a secure practice, especially on sites for shopping etc.

    • Browsing History is just that in all the sites you have visited
    • Download History is a list of what downloads ( applications etc ) that you have done via FF3 and its download manager.
    • Saved form and Search are again items you have searched for in the past.
    • Cache is temporary files from browsing session to aid in speedier loading of pages you have already been too
    • Authenticated Sessions are from sites that you login to ( from forums to banking ), if you close a page that you've logged into and then come back to it later and your still logged in its because your still authenticated, so always have this ticked.

I would also tick the Always clear my private data when I close Firefox.

Wow - thanks Halo - it appears that you have all of the boxes ticked ... but of course, now I have more questions ...

I was under the impression that accepting third-party cookies could be troublesome - or at least pestering?

Also, do you (or anyone else for that matter - please feel free to reply) set-up most everything else (the sites that you "normally" or routinely visit) to be allowed to leave/store cookies? What about pop-ups, automatic loading of images, and add-ons ... might one consider allowing their banking sites (secure - HTTPS) and such to perform any of these functions?

    Thanks again!

    Hi grc

As I have the option to clear all private data on exit of FF, all cookies ( which are no major issue in relation to malware but cookies do have a privacy issue about them, info on cookies ) and temps are deleted anyways.

Funny enough, I need to review some of those settings as I have not changed them since installing the final FF3 version to what I would normally do in the below as the area I was pointing out more so was your original question on those 8 tick boxes in Private Data > Settings.

although it makes no major difference as mentioned I set FF to clear all data on exit, but yes you would be correct in 3rd party cookies box should really be unticked, I know FF2 had removed than option and now its back in FF3 and set on as default!

I more use Vista's IE7 daily as its is much safer than IE for XP, in that it has Protective Mode and settings for cookies are below.

I dont have any cookies set to save/protect ( can be a pain when I forget a websites password though ) I have IEs and FFs popup blocker set to on. If on banking its the first website I will hit in a session, once finished I delete all cookies and temps with CCleaner, but I do internet banking via IE and not FF.
