I have windows XP /SP3. My computer will not show setup.exe files on software CDs. I have checked allow showing hidden files. The setup.exe file does not show up when I use windows explorer in windows and I get an error when I try start/run Application not found. The setup.exe file is on the disk. I see it in safemode on my computer and on all other computers. I see all other .exe files that are on my hard drive. This only happens on software CDs. I have checked other software CDs and the same thing. No setup files.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hope this is what you are asking for:
    Dell XPS SXP051
intel pentium D CPU 3.20GHz 3.19GHz 3.50 GB of RAM

I have had this computer for some time and this is a new issue. I have two internal CD drives and one external USB CD drive. All act the same way.

One of the solutions in that thread encourage the user to use an illegal keygen for pirated software. If you are certain the file(s) are there, then instead of using the program in that thread, try using a free one like this

are you certain that you unchecked the box that says, hide known file extensions, which, if checked, the file would just say setup, not setup.exe, and it would be listed as an application.

Yeah, second time she has posted links outside of here. She should not be giving advice out and is about to have most of her posts edited or deleted.

Yes I have unchecked the box. The whole setup.exe file is not shown and can not be accessed. I have tried start/run and my computer says file not found. However, if I boot in safe mode I can see the setup.exe file so I know it is on the disk. This same disk will act normal in other computers. I have also tried other software CDs in my computer and the setup.exe file is not visible.

Wherever we can we post in house solutions to problem and then we know they are legal.
One of the biggest sins you can commit on MGs is to post illegal software as the object of MA and CP is to give a genuine 100% legal forum where you can get help for your problems.

You have apologised and you have to hope that the management will accept it.

just a shot in the dark, but are you sure you aren't on a limited/non-admin account?
otherwise I'm stumped....only other thing I can think of is maybe some sort of malware is blocking your access...

I'm sorry, this has nothing to do with your topic. I just took this chance to post about my concern. Co'z I have 'spenser nk' virus on my laptap and I don't know how to remove it. There's a post regarding this, sent by gregbolt and it's exactly the same in my case. I tried to post a reply to him but I can't bco'z it says I don't have the access in the admin. He said that he was able to remove it thru the Sophos Technical Bla bla... but I don't know how he did it. If you can help me...I will gladly appreciate it. And thank you for this post.
