Any good suggestions for equipment and setup for reliable home networking with one desktop and several laptops?

A linksys multi function device for very basic networking needs is sufficient.
The linksys multi function device is pretty much plug in and go, very easy for everyday users.

For more advanced networking go with some old cisco networking gear, like a switch and router. Easily obtained in old computer auctions or even E-bay for very cheap.

Cisco routers use command line interface which can be used in the most basic of ways or to the most intricate networking needs.

    Hope this helps.
