I have run sfc /scannow on several occasions over the years on my XP Home SP3 OS without problem.

I've used the normal way of inserting the original installation c.d. and I have used the method of copying the i386 folder from the c.d. to the hard drive beforehand and modifying the source paths as described by Marc Liron at http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html.

A few weeks after performing a clean installation on my machine I noticed one or two glitches. I restored the system, to a date a week before installing a couple of applications, and that remedied the glitches - I think.

However, I decided to run sfc (the normal way) but after each request to insert the c.d. the request window opens again immediately.

    Can someone help please?

    Post your sourcepaths.

I haven't changed them yet on this installation, so they're the system's normal ones.

I have just checked the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
It doesn't have an entry called SourcePath. It has an entry named Installation Sources. Its Type is REG_MULTI_SZ and it points to my c.d. drive.

I have read many items about sfc from various sources and, without exception, they all talk about SourcePath.

So what's happened to my registry?

Dunno. My guess is an overzealous registry cleaner. The attached registry file will set your sourcepaths to C:\.

Backup your registry. If you have any questions how, check the guides and faqs forum.

    Excuse the delay in responding.

I did a repair installation and then ran Steve Gibson's SpinRite - which took 36 hours.

No nasty bits on the drive.

    And sfc now runs correctly.

    Thank you for your interest.
