 Hi, this is my first post and I'm new to all this. Ya'll will have to tell me if I do something wrong. I still in the learning phases of computers, but I am learning a great deal. I have had spyware and a virus already and went through that. I thought my spyware was gone and I'm not picking up anything significant through my antispyware programs. I defragmented just yesterday but now my screen is shaking a lot. Does anyone have any ideas. I have Windows XP with SP 2, my CPU is 2.40, 80 RAM, 512.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks!

Have you tried the deguass function on your monitor if so equipped? Do you have any magnetic devices such as speakers in close proximity to your monitor? If so, move them. I'm assuming that your have a CRT monitor and not LCD.

Defragging shouldn't cause a problem like this, and anything that an antispyware program finds merits attention.

You mentioned going through getting a virus and spyware. Are you certain that your computer is clean? If not, then I would recommend visiting the Spyware Specific section of this forum, read the sticky notes at the top, and follow all the procedures. Hope this helps! :)

    Thanks Novice!

I'm afraid I didn't know what a degauss function was and I did set it plus I moved my speakers away as they were quite close. I will be attempting the spyware removals steps. I had to deal with Microsoft to get rid of the spyware as it was one of those nasty programs that wouldn't allow you to remove it. However, I still wondered if there were still any remaining cause at the time and still remaining was existing something they knew nothing about. Images whether graphics or words remain once you switch to another page or program. Such as when I pull up my web browser as it opens up, I can see part of my screen saver from my desktop and my web browser or parts of words or part of a graphic remain when I go to another web page. Nothing usually the same graphic or words consistently but always occurring. There's so much to learn. Anyhow I appreciate your help so much and hope this clears up this problem.

    Thanks,

    Allofthegang :)

It is possible that the "Degaussing" circuit has gone out on the monitor, so it is not doing its job when you turn on the monitor. Most likely you will end up having to replace the CRT very soon.

What model of Computer Monitor is it? In the menu function of the monitor (buttons on front should access it) there should be a choice to select Degauss.

Not brand, model. Most likely it is a Dell repackaged Sony monitor. It should have a Model# on the lable on the back of the monitor, or silkscreened on the plastic around the CRT.

No. It will say Model right before it. What is printed on the front plastic of the monitor?

on the front it says dell
    then an exit button
    a sun button
a half and half circle button
    a menu button
    and a power button

i dont know what the model would look like

When you Degauss it, it will cause the shaking to happen, but you should not do it more then maybe once a month, or else you end up causing problems.

If it shakes after being on for a while, then the monitor is going bad.

you sure it not like a virus or something?

No. There used to be a TSR (Terminal System Resident) that you could use to do that, but it was at DOS level only. I would say that your monitor may be going out. Check in your local area for a TV repair shop and have them look at it, due to they have the tools.
