Norton has a itility that allows you to see the staus of your network.
I have both Netgear router WGR614 v9 and card WG511 v2. The laptop reads 'laptop secure /desktop restricted' while the desktop reads 'desktop secure/laptop shared'.
Are these settings safe or should I NOT have shared?
Where do I change this 'shared' setting if necessary, at the desktop or the laptop?'
    Thank you

Sharing folders to access info from one computer to the other is the prime use of Network.

However if you do not want to share look at the laptops folders see what is shared and unshare it.

Since I do not know which OS you are using. Use windows help and serch for the term Unshare folders.

    >>You answered two of my questions in that I now know the term 'share' does not involve connectivity and I can change to 'unshare' at the laptop.
I have win xp Home sp3.
The desktop satys it is secure and the laptop is shared so I will look to the laptop folders as you say to find where to "unshare".
    Thank you
