Welcome Spudgirl, to MG. If you cannot get help as Clark Kent suggests, then try a Registry Cleaner. Some links below. Your problem is probably a Registry entry left over after your original install. Each time to try to re-install, the program sees that you have previously tried the software and won't let you install again. You have to remove the old Registry entry first. Bazza

Bazza that wont work. The reg key is not invalid and will not be removed by a registry cleaner. The timer was meant to lock up in the event of an uninstall. This helps prevent trial versions from being reinstalled.

The timer must still be stored somewhere, as I (mis?) understand it. If you remove all traces of the original install, then I have always assumed (wrongly it appears) that leftover stuff is still in the Registry, that stop another re-install. Other possibility is that the period of grace allowed to install shareware, from the date of download, has expired. For example, if there is only a 14 day evaluation time limit, you cannot re-install the same download a month later. Please correct me on both these points. Bazza

It would help if we knew the exact name of the program in question as there may be certain unidentifiable registry keys that can be deleted.

You are not wrong Bazza. It will be in the registry but registry cleaners wont see it as an invalid key.Not all leftovers are cleaned by registry cleaning software.

Thanks kadavill. Looks like I'm going to have to delve deeper into the innards of the Registry, manually, to see what is left behind after running various Registry cleaners. Stupid me, I thought all (most) of the leftovers were removed. Especially after running 1-3 different Registry cleaners. I guess the "Software" tab/folder, under the various HKEY (hives, I think they are called, from memory), is a good starting place. Any other hidden spots you would care to recommend I check?

Bazza if you notice, different registry cleaners find different things. They dont know what were added by a program. They work by checking registry keys that are depended on files. So if uninstalling a software removes the file but not the keys, then the reg cleaners will fix that.A good way to find what is left behind is using http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=965 and http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=966 .For files that are left behind in the system folder I use filemap by bb.

Hey Bazza,I wont recommend you to keep track of all your registry keys. Its too much trouble.I dont do it.But I do monitor files using filemap by bb.Filemap is really quick just a second to make an inventory. For registry backups and reg-defrag http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1267

Thanks for the links, and advice, Kadavill.

Now we better get back to Spudgirl's original post.
    Sorry Spudgirl.
As Insomniac said earlier, let us know what is the name, and version, of the offending program.:D Bazza

kadavill, Erunt says in one spot that it works on NT and later. However in the expanded comments section it mentions Win 9x, and others. Is it safe to use this version on W98SE? Bazza
