    Hi, I have a Sharp AL-1457D Copier/Printer/Scanner, I have just bought a new toner cartridge, the cartridge I have bought is not the correct one, I bought a AL-100TD, I should have got the AL-110DC! Now the only apparent difference is a lug on the end you insert, its set at the wrong angle! Otherwise they are it seems identical...... Would it be possible to just chop this lug off??? It does not seem to be for any reason except to assist in lining it up when inserting? I could even glue it back on at the correct angle.. I have a picture of the cartridges and lugs side by side, I will attach....... for your thoughts and ideas..
    Any advice/recommendations welcome.

    Greetings, skthecat.

    Gotta love these pure hardware querys! ;)

    I agree: if you're sure that the guides are purely that, and that they aren't used to physically trip a switch or block a beam of some sort, then go for it - I've trimmed plastic on cartridges, panels, etc. many times. For that matter, even if there's a signal function that should be performed by the guide, you should be able to position it so that everything's kosher.

    Keep us posted, and welcome to MG! :major

    Yes,I am sure, if you look at the picture attached to the original post, its that cylinderical thingy, one is straight on (the AL-110DC) which is the replacement I have bought, the other with the cylinderical post thats set at around -
    45 Degrees, is the one that is in the copier now, I have truly examined them both and cannot think what that post is for except perhaps to assist insertion of the toner unit. There does not seem to be a sensor in the recess where it goes, in actual fact, it looks like a big hole that has a small plaggy plate clipped in that takes the post, tried to get the plate out, but not enough access to remove it without busting it.
    So you reckon, go for it???? I paid £50 for the replacement off fleabay, they cost £100+ new, so perhaps its worth a go?? Might even try to taper it down with a pencil sharpener rather than breaking it off?

    HI Caliban, I am in the UK, do you mean, yea, have a go at making it fit, or resell on ebay? What are the chances of it actually working wuith my modifications????

    Cheers;

    Ah, sorry I wasn't clear: if I were in your shoes, I'd try to make the thing work.

    Thanks, what are my chances of making it work? are these things made with just these little tiny differences to make them more unique, therefore more expensive to replace, when just a tiny mod will make them work?

    Re: Sharp Copier Toner Query/Confirmation (UPDATE)

    Soz for the delayed update on this matter. We were correct, the cartridge is identical except for that lug which has no real function except to force you into buying the exact toner cartridge!!!!:mad You can do either of the following to make these cartridges work;

    1) Where the lug fits into the same shaped hole in the copier/printer itself, there is a removable plate (Keyhole) which excepts the lug (Key) on the cartridge, simply remove the plate, it can be got out with a little patience and a couple of flat head screwdrivers. The cartridge then fits...

    OR

    2) if you cannot remove the plate, (not got screwdrivers, not very confident) Yoh can simply cut the lug of the cartridge (so the lug does not reach the plate) and then tape over the hole left where the lug was.

    And there you have it!!!
    :cool:)
