Hello, I am after some help please :)

I have had some problems with the above that seemed to be infecting a lot of files. I have been using AVG free antivirus.

I have worked through all the steps on the "READ AND RUN ME FIRST" thread and there are no longer any pop ups of new infections and the pc seems a bit quicker again but a lot of icons aren't displaying properly and certain programmes won't open, e.g. windows media player.

I was unable to uninstall the old version of Sun Java or install the latest version due to an error message ("fatal error during installation"). There were no other problems with installing the various programmes, I have attached the logs as requested.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

    Steve

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

We need to get some additional info using another tool that is part of MGtools.

Now run the C:\MGtools\FindRN.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Based on your logs, you have no antivirus protection installed. Your logs do show brokem or incomplete uninstalls of both AVG9 and ESET Nod32. The below instructions will attempt to cleanup from these broken applications. If you have made any changes ( like reinstalled either of these ) after attaching your logs, you should not continue with the below. You will have to tell me if you made changes to your system since posting logs.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 13

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper - {DBC80044-A445-435b-BC74-9C25C1C588A9} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jp2ssv.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: JQSIEStartDetectorImpl - {E7E6F031-17CE-4C07-BC86-EABFE594F69C} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ie\jqs_plugin.dll (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: Titan Poker - {49783ED4-258D-4f9f-BE11-137C18D3E543} - C:\Poker\Titan Poker\casino.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Titan Poker - {49783ED4-258D-4f9f-BE11-137C18D3E543} - C:\Poker\Titan Poker\casino.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: UltimateBet - {3EB3B7E8-1466-405A-B5BC-44513AF85E34} - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\UltimateBet\UltimateBet.lnk (file missing) (HKCU)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: UltimateBet - {3EB3B7E8-1466-405A-B5BC-44513AF85E34} - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\UltimateBet\UltimateBet.lnk (file missing) (HKCU)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I uninstalled AVG as MGtools wasn't running and thought that might be why. Once I ran MGtools and posted the logs I have since re-installed AVG (the full version on trial instead of the free one at the moment).

Okay then run this new fix instead.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 13

If you still have a problem uninstall Java, try using the below to uninstall it:

    Revo Uninstaller

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

Thanks I have done everything you said (logs are attached).

The pc generally seems to be running a bit better (quicker). But a lot of the icons are still not displaying and when I try to play any sort of music/video I get the error message: Windows cannot find 'c:\program files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click search.

Is it likely that media player been deleted along with the icons by the virus or something similar?!

    Thanks again :cool

What exactly are you referring to? Do you mean icons on your Desktop? Be specific and give a couple exact examples.

Possibly. If you do not see Windows Media Player on your PC then try reinstalling it from Microsoft. Windows Media Player should be here: C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe

Desktop icons and icons on Start>All programs. On the 'all programs' menu only 9 have icons out of 30+. On the desktop it's mostly the things I had to download from the original thread (anti spyware progs) that don't have icons. (They may not even be meant to have any I suppose)

I have re-downloaded Windows media player so music files now work but I am unable to open any photos/pictures (Error message = An error is preventing the photo or video from being displayed"). Also, internet explorer frequently freezes and crashes and often won't close without going through taks manager to 'end task'.

That's about all the problems I am having still, thanks for all the help, I understand if there's nothing more you can do

Please be more specific. Give me at least one example of a problem icon from your Desktop and also one from All Programs.

If the items you have a problem with on your Desktop are just items downloaded during malware removal, just delete all of them (except do not delete ComboFix.exe yet as we will uninstall it later and will need this file. Also do not delete Defogger.exe since we will need to use it too during final steps).

It is possible that your icon cache file has been corrupted and needs to be rebuilt. This file is the below:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db

You would have to rename the IconCache.db file to IconCache.db.backup just to be on the safe side and keep a backup.
    • And then you need to kill all explorer.exe processes using Task Manager.
    • Your Desktop will go black when you kill all explorer.exe processes.
    • Then in Task Manager you can click File, New Task (run...) and enter explorer.exe and click OK.
    • This will restart Windows Explorer ( the Windows shell ) and it should rebuild the icons.
    Did that help?
