My screen keeps shivering - I don't think it is a virus as I run Norton, adaware and spybot daily - any ideas please?

and before I forget I have pushed in all the connections! I am using XP

    ThankX

Does your monitor setup have an option to degauss? It would be in the onscreen controls. Might help.

Also, check to make sure you are using the highest refresh rate your monitor and Vid card can handle at the resolution you are using.

have you checked your refresh rate
xp likes to set it at 60hz but you want to set it as high as your monitor will allow

    Thanx and more help please!

Can you tell me where to check for this please and how to change it?

I have also been told it may be the graphics card 'not letting go' as it started when a game was being shut down. We have had the game running again and it works OK

I have also taken out the monitor plug and de-static ed it.

    Thanks

    Jenny

And it's not necessary to have the refresh rate at tha absolute max it's capable of. The default 60 Hz refresh rate is slow enough that most people notice some flickering and is hard on the eyes over long periods. 72 to 75 Hz is fast enough to eliminate the flickers. I run mine at 85, which is plenty fast enough. Some gamers prefer higher just to allow faster screen refresh in fast moving games, but anything 75 or above should eliminate flicker.

But if your screen is actually shimmering, with the image physically moving around, it's not likely refresh rate flicker. Electrical interference as Robo noted is a possibility.

Does this happen JUST as the game shuts down, and then steady down immediately? If so, the game may be running at a different resolution than your desktop is set for, and the picture may jump a bit as the resolution changes back. Many games default to a fairly low resolution, to make the game play faster/smoother on older/slower systems. If your system can play the game smoothly at a higher resolution, it will look better. Check the game's display options and see what resolution it's playing at, and try playing at the same resolution as your normal desktop. Then see if it still flickers when you shut it down.

  8. When it happens, just check the wire in the back of your monitor. If you wiggle it and the shivering goes away, its your connections in the back. If not check your refresh rate.
