Wondering if anyone cares to evaluate this - its an anti-v by a local company that I'm considering trying,as some friends are raving about it ,and I've about had it with the "Good guys" turning into bloatware..60MB downloads, for heavens' sake - like my latest forced upgrade.

    http://www.ansav.com/download/

It gave a false positive on CCleaners'uninstal.exe, but so did a bunch of others,

Opinions would be much appreciated,as I'm pushed for memory, and need a very light but secure system..and my country DOES produce some of the best hackers....oh boy am I gonna get in trouble for that one :-D

Says not to use as stand alone protection.

Same with the newer beta version - http://wareseeker.com/Portable-Software/ansav-e-3.0.1-beta-7.zip/229014

Still under development from what I see and targets localized Indonesian threats.
Seems to be a portable version really doubt if it gives realtime protection anyway!!!

Why not go with Avira or Avast if the AVG 8.5 60MB is putting you off.

Sorry timed out. Just to confirm it's not real time and simply a scanner..

    Cheers...

    Thanks so much,Sikvik,

Really appreciate your response.I went with Avira, which seems to be fine, and my "System" in task manager is now running @ 236k,not 60,000k,which it had been after getting AVG 8.5 - not to mention the first time I tried to install,it crashed my laptop - could it have damaged my tiny 50G system running like that for 3 days ? :cry

I must still have some issues,as my sound is fragmented (Windows welcoming chimes sound demented) and still have a high CPU reading, most of the time.

Ah,well, back to good 'ol "Read me and run..."
Sure glad you guys are around:major

I've been trying out Avira for a little while as well, and it has a pop-up each time it auto-updates, to ask you to upgrade to the full version, but other than that it seems to be fine.

    Thanks again,will do.
BTW,I found the source of my fragmented welcome chimes and sound in general - thought I have no clue why or how it happened.
My hard drive had reverted to PIO transfer mode from DMA.Fixing it also took care of the high CPU.
Last time this happened,I needed my brother to re-install - I'm not up to that - yet,but thanks to you folks,I'm getting there.:wave

    Help ! :cry

    sikvik,
I used the AVG uninstaller link, downloaded and ran and got the attached error log.

And my fragmented sound is back, but only slightly, while CPU is still lower, but starting to climb again.

Checked my hard drive transfer mode - its Ultra DMA Mode 5

Running XP Pro version 2002 Service pack 2.

Ok my bad. Most AV uninstall utilities have you uninstall from Add/Remove and then run their tool. Works like a charm. The AVG tool however recommends the tool only with a bad repair/uninstall.

Still, no harm done by running the utility. Don't worry about the log.

What process is taking up CPU cycle in Task Manager. Is the Hard drive thrashing intermittently. Is the HD indicator lighting up and showing unusual/additional activity.

CPU is a bit high, but no where near before I junked AVG and did the fix on my hard drive - it was reverting to PIO transfer mode from DMA.
    (AVG was using 20 thou K and system 60,000 K !! - system now at 623 K )

Just in case its malware,I have posted my logs in "malware" - as understand any rouge processes don't show in task manager, which looks OK to me.

I use Smartdefrag and CCleaner every week,as hundreds of photo files come and go,and was surprised to see 10% fragmented files on D,normal would be around 4-6% for me.I got it down to 7% using the defrag, deleted some programs I'm not using, old pic files, etc.

As an unestablished (self-unemployed :-D) photographer,I pretty much have to use free programs,so wondering about my anti spyware mix - its now Avira Free,SAS,and Malwarebites,as I loaded up the "read me and run " recommended downloads - which should I keep after getting the all-clear,and do I need a Firewall, like PCTools, too ?

PS,no worries about the AVG Uninstall.

This morning, computer seems to be running better, logs are up in malware section,,but as they look pretty clean, other than BHO stuff I think could go,according to your Hijack tutorial,NOT really worried - seems that the Combofix may have fixed some issues just by running it.

    1. I do notice a huge amount of stuff from programs I'd deleted, like the odd AVG file,(!) a driver from 2 years ago, etc, which I'll try to clean up on a one by one basis, after researching in depth.

    2. I went thro' the task manager and start up with a fine tooth comb, and unless there is a super smart virus hiding out,it looks OK.

    3. Reading a lot of other posts gave me tuns of new info, and explained how the hard drive reverted to an earlier setting - seems any new program can change settings.

    4. Windows was automatically updating, again, something I'd turned off.

5.I have some original programs on disk, which as they were gifts from my brother,I'll upload to various sites found in threads to see if they are good or not.

    6. I'll make a limited user account for the kids,as its likely they connected a phone or MP3 player to my laptop, hence some iffy files in the recycle bin....which no one will admit to owning.AND change my password.

Thanks so much for all the help ! :wave
