Shortcut Files

I have all my photos stored by date & then create shortcuts in collections folders (e.g. one for my son) to the photos across the various dated folders.

Is there an applicaiton that woudl allow me to do two things:-

    1) Copy a sortcut to a new folder (generally a USB memory stick) in such a way that the original file is copiued rather than the shortcut

    2) manage my shortcuts so that if I move the original file (e.g. if I archive them to DVD) the shortcuts in the collections folder is updated to point to the new location (obviously the DVD drive as opposed to the disk itself :))

This sounds simple enough, but I dont think its built into Windows (is it?) ... maybe there's soem freeware that does it?

    fwiw- I have Vista

For #1 above, you could just copy-n-paste the file/folder to the new location I guess. It's not fast or glamorous but it works. As for #2, I'm not aware of anything that will update shortcuts; unless you simply delete the old ones and create new ones. Check the BackUp section here at MajorGeeks for programs that might handle task #1 better than just cut-n-paste.... Yeah, I know this isn't great info.... Hey, I tried.... right? ;)

Thanks - the copy-paste option only works for copying & pasting the original file. My problem is I have shortcuts I am working from & if I want to copy a selection of photos of my son onto a USB stick I need to follow the shortcut to the original file & then copy & paste that, which can be time consuming as the original files are in multiple different date folders. I'm just looking for an applicaiton to "copy" the shortcut - but what it actually does is resolve the shortcut & copy the original file

Thanks for your help though :)

Maybe you already did this, but there's tons of back up utilities available in the Major Geeks 'Back Up' downloads section that have varying levels of user defined automation. You can set the parameters according to your needs for individual folders and the utility will back up the folders as specified when specified, and you can always override this and do anything manually if needed. I've used Karens Replicator a couple of times and it worked great for what I needed it to do. Take a look at it and maybe you'll find others in the Back Up section....

    Good luck ;)
