I'm always looking for ways to improve my Windows experience. Latest project is tackling bootup time.

    BootLog Analyser v1.23 from http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/bootloganalyzer123.html
prints out a complete sequence of the bootup procedure (c:\BOOTLOG.TXT). You can sort it to various sequences. Couldn't find BLA in MG site so the link shown.
I sorted it to descending time taken, and started at the top and worked down.
Got rid of the biggest and am left with this first round of queries.

Much edited version of bootlog.txt is listed below. MSCONFIG-->Startup does not show anything related to these queries. I assume they are in Win.ini or system.ini and my main experience relates to the Startup area.

TSRQuery at 8.67 is the greatest bootup time hog left on my PC. I assume that because I have W98SE with a config.sys and autoexec.bat running, it relates to a TSR that I have elected to run. Answering my own question I guess I can simply REM out each command in turn, in autoexec.bat, and see what makes the difference.

    11:35:18 8.67 InitDone = TSRQuery (time estimated)

    Q. Any other way of determining which TSR it is? Any way to shorten the time taken, apart from deleting it?

    TapeDetection?

    11:35:27 4.56 Enumerating TapeDetection (TAPECONTROLLER\TAPEDETECTION\0000)
    11:35:32 0.00 Enumerated TapeDetection (TAPECONTROLLER\TAPEDETECTION\0000)

    Q. To my knowledge (limited) I should not need anything related to TapeDetection. What is it, why do I need it, where is it, so I can uncheck/delete it?

AVG, which I assume is the antivirus program I used to use. I now use Avast.

    11:35:14 2.56 INITCOMPLETE = AVGCORE
    11:34:50 1.22 C:\PROGRA~1\AVG6\BOOTUP.EXE[000B7319] starting
    11:34:59 0.17 Loading Vxd = C:\PROGRA~1\AVG6\AvgCore.vxd
    11:35:08 0.11 DEVICEINIT = AVGCORE
    11:35:09 0.06 DEVICEINITSUCCESS = AVGCORE
    11:35:18 0.00 INITCOMPLETE = AVGFSH
    11:35:18 0.00 INITCOMPLETESUCCESS = AVGFSH
    11:35:17 0.00 INITCOMPLETESUCCESS = AVGCORE

    Q. Lots of entries for AVG that I no longer use. I will re-install it if I decide that I want to switch back to AVG. Where are these entries, how can I unflag/delete them?

CHIMOUSE (I think relates to an old mouse I had installed?)

    11:35:14 0.00 INITCOMPLETE = CHIMOUSE
    11:35:14 0.00 INITCOMPLETESUCCESS = CHIMOUSE
    11:35:08 0.00 DEVICEINIT = CHIMOUSE
    11:35:08 0.00 DEVICEINITSUCCESS = CHIMOUSE

    Q. I now use a Microsoft Ps2/USB Optical WheelMouse (convertible, set to PS2) so I assume these CHIMOUSE entries can go as well. Where are these entries, how can I unflag/delete them?

    My System Specs as follows:-

W98SE, P2/400,288mb RAM (maxed out) IE6, AOL UK V7.0, V90 dialup modem, 30gig hard drive, plenty of room.

Any help will be appreciated, in speeding up my Windows bootup.

Next project is deleting valid, but rarely used, Shortcut links. Over 600 of them, but that will be another project/post, later. Bazza

Maxwell, Thanks for the links. Will check them out. We all complain about how long windows takes to boot up, not matter what OS. Boot Log Analyzer is a great place to start, on W98SE at least. Bazza
