Should I get SP2 for XP?

I'm new here, but I'll stow the pleasantries for another time. I run WinXP SP1. I was a little skeptical when I heard all the problems with SP1 and turned off automatic updates so as to not have to DL SP2. Can anyone tell me what the pros of SP2 are over SP1? Thank you for the help.

 

Yes, definetly update your system to SP2. SP2 contains fixes for several critical security issues with SP1. An unpatched system represents a serious security risk for your computer.

The Best time to install SP2 is with a fresh clean install of XP, no need to download sp1 first all the stuff from 1 is in SP2.

 

Agreed, however, once you patch to SP2, I recoemned not using their firewall and using a different one. Zonealarm is a decent free one.

For the home user, you generally do not have a thing to worry about when upgrading to xp2. If you have a concern, do a full system backup before you install SP2 and have at it!

I had assumed that patches are released for sp1 and sp2, that effect sp1 and sp2 respectively.

What benefits does sp2 really give you over sp1?

I use a packet filter / firewall so I don't need the MS one ( which isn't even a packet filter. )

I update my patches manually ever since that messenger 4.7 issue.

If sp1 is not being patched then I might consider switching over to sp2, but I thought they can run parallel. I just don't Microsoft's "extra features".

 

Firewalls are not the only aspect of security in Sp2.
