First of all, I want to thank all of you for the detailed information you have provided in ridding our cpu's of these pesky viruses and parasites...and all the tools for free! This has been quite an education for me. I followed Major Attitudes' tutorial on Basic Spyware Removal & Hijack This (revised edition)to the best of my ability. I'll try to be concise.

I am using Windows XP HEd SP1, AMDXP1800, 1.53GHz,480 MB RAM. I think 40 G of which I have used one-half. Do you need anything else?

I downloaded Avast, Spybolt Search and Destroy, CWShedder, Ad-Aware 6.0, CCleaner, Spyware Blaster, and Mozilla FireFox (I think I am going to like it.). For the last few days I have only been to this forum, so I have not had a chance to see how everything is working.
    Getting Prepared Steps 1- 4:
    1. Did the Windows Updates just before using the programs you suggested. I have kept it that Automatic Updates since the beginning.
    2. I disabled System Restore and it is still disabled.
    3. I have not seen those two hijackers, so I have not changed Network Security Service.
    4. I used scanned with all the tools in Safe Mode.

Scanning and Cleaning Steps 1- 4:
    1. I did an online scan and the used Avast several times and have come up clean for viruses.
    2.CCleaner
did a great job It found 60+ items. Everything was closed except the Desktop. I did not do this in the Safe Mode though, was that necessary?
3 Before coming here, I used Spybot Search and Removal then and.doxdesk.com. They identified the culprit.HuntBar / BTin a variant I believe, of the lop parasite. This is the one that was so hard to remove. CCShredder is the tool that finally got rid of that Blue Tool bar with M-3, Gambling etc written acrossed it I had taken their sites out of my Favorites and off my desktop but couldn't get rid it entirely until I did CCShredder again in Safe Mode. AD-Aware got rid of some others.

The and.doxdesk tool did identify a lot of the files of the lop parasite, which I would run across and remove manually before finding your site. I also told me some of the names of the programs I did not want in ADD & REMOVE. All of which were published by WinTools. Is that with lop parasite and is the Cool websearch part of that group? I found out that the MyWebSearch Toolbar I loved was at the base of most of my problems! Plus some where along the way I downloaded Smiley Central although I took it off...or so I thought.4. The only program I can not get out of ADD & REMOVE is another WinTools which is called MyWebSpeedbar and is supposed to be for Outlook, Incredimail. etc. When I try to remove (online), I get this blank window with the long file name at the top It ends in a .dll. Nothing is showing up in the scans. http://images/icons/icon10.gif Should I run Hijack Thishttp://images/icons/icon5.gif

    Thank you for your consideration.

I have included a picture of what comes up in ADD & REMOVE when I try to remove My WebSpeedbar. It claims to be for Outlook and Incredimail but is shown to be published by WinTools.

Sorry, for the poor editing job on the first post in this thread, I didn't know I was being timed. If you wish I can correct it and repost. That 'stuff' at the bottom was my attempt to use an emotican. Marti

PS Downloaded my e-mail for the first time since installing Zone Alarm and other tools. ZA seems to be doing a great job and so far No pop-ups! and no toolbars I do not recognise. M.

    Hi,
doxdesk has a great page on removing the lop parasite:
    http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/lop.html

Often times you need to stop running processes or do it from safe mode. What happens when you try to delete something and it is running is Windows protects the file and you cant remove it. By pressing ctrl alt and delte and going to proccesses you can kill a running process or application.

Let me know if this was of help.

Oh, as for Hijack This, you seemed to have naviagated very well. I suggest running it and seeing if you see anything you know you should remove per the tutorial and from what you have learned. When your all done, if you would like us to look at your log file when you feel your finished, attach it here and we will.
