    Greetings all!

I'm interested in upgrading my CPU. First of all, here's my current system...

    HP Pavilion 513n
    Intel Celeron 1.8 GHz CPU
    512 Mb PC2100 DDR Memory
    ASUS mobo

I'd like to go up to at least a 2.7 GHz CPU. Is it worth the effort if I can find a good deal on the processor? Does anyone know if my system supports this upgrade? Do I have to use a Celeron or could I use a P4? Would I have to replace the mobo as well?

    Any input is appreciated!

    Thanks!

Have you thought about the fact that just simply upgrading to a faster speed ram (especially considering it is only pc2100) to see if that gives you the results you are looking for...becuase it is entirely possible...and it's cheaper...and it's also MUCH easier to do as far as physically messing with the hardware!!!???

    good suggestion... thanks!

so... considering my CPU, could I go as high 1.2 Gb of PC3200? can the processor handle that?

It depends on what your motherboard supports... Do you have the full product number/name of your ASUS mobo? If your motherboard supports DDR-400 (PC3200) then yes you can probably run 1 GB of ram... BUT! IF you have 1 stick of pc3200 and one stick of pc2100 your ram is going to run at PC 2100 speed, unless you get 1 gig of the same pc3200...

Sorry to lead you on, but...after doing some research...your pc will not handle anything but up to pc2100...so you can't put a faster mhz in there!! Sorry

So...meanwhile...back to the processor...can you give me the serial # and the product #...and I can find out what can be expected!!

okay... hope this is the right info...

    Motherboard Chipset:Intel Brookdale-G i845GL
    Motherboard Name:Asus P4G533-LA
    Motherboard ID:08/27/2002-I845G/ICH4/IT8708-P4G533LA

    Couldn't find a serial number...

    Thanks!

Actually...I meant for the pc itself...not the motherboard.

There should be a sticker on the back or side of the case...providing this information!!

    ahh... lol, okay...

BTW... I D/L-ed the Everest program... I love that thing! :D

    Everest is awesome!!!!

As far as upgrading your cpu...you can go up to 2.0 ghz (celeron or P4) with a maximum fsb of 400!!

    Hope that helps!!!

Unfortunately...you most likely will NOT see a performance boost!!!! You need about a 50% increase to see a noticeable performance boost!!

ahh... so it's probably not worth the time & expense. thanks for the advice!

how about upgrading the BIOS or maybe OC-ing the CPU?

I know I'm reaching here... trying to avoid the inevitable "new PC" solution!

    Thanks!

Hmmm, not sure, but going from a 1.8 ghz to 2.0 ghz celery cpu won't make much of a difference. Now, if going to a full P4 2ghz with more L2 cache, the performance boost should be a bit better. That boost in cache does increase performance and speed quite a bit. Hence the Intel EE cpus have 1 meg of L2 cache (hence the expensive price tag)..

What's the power rating of your PSU? Brand name PCs tend to sell with the minimum amount necessary. If you go too far, your CPU won't get enough power and your system will shut down or not boot at all.

Are you sure you have an ASUS board? According to this:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&product=90384&lang=en&cc=us&docname=bph07813

Which I looked up with your specs, you do not have an ASUS board. Unless you upgraded your board.

So, first of all, I'd recomment this:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&product=90384&dlc=en&softwareitem=pv-15624-1

which should upgrade your bios for better CPUs. You have a socket a478. From what I understand. Anyway, hopefully, I'm not way off base on this info.....

I got all my system information using Everest. I never made any changes to the mobo, but even before I used Everest, I never saw anything in my Properties tabs about a Trigem board...

According to the HP chat ding dong...you can go to a P4 up to 400fsb...but...just in my QUICK research...I couldn't find anything for sale (not including ebay) that was less than 2.6ghz...and that was over 150.00 dollars!! I'm sure there's bound to be somebody out there with a 2.0 P4 cpu for sale...but I myself am leary about buying used cpus...unless ofcourse it was a close friend or something like that!! So another words...I stick STRICTLY to store bought cpu!!
