i was wondering if i upgraded my vid card from a ati all-in-wonder 9800 128meg to something like a ati x700pro 256 meg would i notice any difference or am i wasting money . also if anyone has a better suggestion on a vid card it would be welcomed .

I'd say the 7800gs would be right up your alley, or if you are on a tight budget go with a 6600gt or 6800 variety. Just make sure it's agp.

7800gs or 6800gs, the 7800gs is the best agp card right now (and probably will be the last good one) and the 6800gs has performance closely matching a 6800 Ultra but for much less money. If you think u may just do a complete system overhaul or build a new system altogether, id save ur money and go for a 6800gs.

if you are planning an upgrade, I wouldnt settle for less than an X850XT PE or a 6800gs as they were mentioning. Anything less and I wouldnt think its worth your money.

Keep an eye out for deals on X850XT PE's, they commonly go on sale for $150-$200, and are a great upgrade from a 9800. It is harder to find a sale on an AGP version, but they do come by once in a while.

yeah, you will need the 7800gs to play duke nukem forever.:)

It depends on the rest of your system specs.

No use getting a better card if your hardware isn't a good match or can't keep up.

x700's are worse than what you have!, i have one and would not recomend them, total waste of money

x700 is not worse, but not a whole lot better either.

Of course, I'm pretty sure they are only PCIe, which makes the point moot, unless you are going to upgrade the motherboard.

I agree with insomniac unless you have an xp 2800,p4 2.8 or 'about' you wont be able to make use of a higher spec card, not enough extra performance to make it worth the money :)

I have a very similar question that Earthpig13 did, running a P4 3g here with 1 gig of 3200 corsair ram.

similar as in upgrading your AGP video card? What do you currently have? About the best you could do would be a Radeon AX850XT PE, or a GeForce 6800Ultra or 7800GS (only the GS is AGP as far as I know.)

your system shouldnt cause any bottlenecks with the card.

Ooops, sry. Yes I am thinking of upgrading my video card also. It's an agp ATI 9800 all in wonder.

i dont think they have agp 6800ultra cards, but the 6800gs is pretty much the same

they certainly do have 6800Ultra AGP cards, the 6800 series was released right when PCI-Express was, they would have lost a lot of money to not make an AGP version.

in any case, depending on the games you wish to play, an upgrade would definetly increase performance for Tater.
