Should Windows Not Automatically Create Restore Points?

I'm on Windows 8.1, I have system protection turned on, but the only restore point available is one I created a couple of weeks ago. Should Windows not have automatically created some more since then?

Are you sure you have plenty of space for a new restore point.??

How big is your hard drive.

I learned recently that restore points are volume shadows.

And i all so read some where that Windows 8 - Restore points are automatically deleted at each start up.

Not sure how true this is.But are you any good in reg edit.

Go to the Metro interface > click at the bottom of the page and then click > All applications > Run.

    Type > regedit and OK.
In the registry, expand the following keys.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices.
Right-click on MountedDevices then select New > Key.
A new key is created. Name it as "Offline".
Right-click on the Offline key > New Value > Dword 32.
Name the value as: " \DosDevices\C"
The C/ refers to the letter of the system partition.
Select "Hexadecimal" and as value enter "1".
    Close the Registry.
Then go to Control Panel > Recovery > Configure System Restore.
Disable the system restore feature and reactivate it.
Allocate a maximum 7-8% to the system restore feature and create a Restore point.
Restore points will no longer be cleared, upon restarting your PC.

Not sure why microsoft did this but it's an obvious problem.

Not really a windows 8 user but i am pretty sure this might help you with this issue.

If the percentage of disk space allocated to System Restore is set too low then SR points will be deleted continually.
If the free space on the drive in question is too low, that will also mean deletion of SR points.
The percentage of disk space a user devotes to SR points is the important question. If there is a substantial amount of free disk space, the 'maximum' figure allocated is irrelevant. A user can periodically remove SR points very easily with CCleaner > Tools > SR or they can do it via Disk Clean up.

    That's true all so max.

CCleaner does remove a lot of unwanted stuff.

Yes but only by a user action. CCleaner wont remove any SR points unless a user selects it. So it wont happen by mistake.

Hopefully you tick the 'Show more restore points' box.
I'm sure you do but thought it worth a mention:)

The full list of SR points are actually easier to see immediately with CCleaner > Tools > System Restore

I currently have 380 GB free, and the maximum allocation for restore points is set at 25%.

What 'show more restore points' box? I can't see that anywhere.

Check box to display more restore points will not appear If there are no other restore point available. Once the maximum disk space allocated for system restore has been reached, automatically the older restore points will get deleted. Follow below steps to create new restore points:
Press WinKey+X to display the system menu and click on System
On the left side menu, click on System Protection
Now choose the system drive and click the Configure button
Look at the Max Usage slider and make sure that you have it set to at least 15% of the total hard drive space.
After this, press WinKey+R to display the Run dialog
    Type Taskschd.msc and click OK
In the Task Scheduler window, expand Task Scheduler Library
Scroll down and select the System Restore task
In the top section right click the system restore task and select Properties
At the bottom of the properties window, place a check mark in the run with highest privileges option and click ok.
Close task scheduler and monitor system restore component for a week to make sure that the system restore points are being created.

Great, thanks. I've followed almost all those steps (already knew maximum allocation was set to 25%). I'll let you know how it goes.

Defraggers that aren't VSS 'aware' will also cause restore points to be deleted.

Which stands for: Shadow Copy (also known as Volume Snapshot Service, Volume Shadow Copy Service or VSS) a technology included in Microsoft Windows.
That's what creates System Restore Points.

Thanks. I don't use defraggers, though, so I'm in the clear on that point.

I think i said that about Shadow Copy in my second post.

In all honesty unless you need a restore point.I normally don't worry about it.Be cause it tends to take up more space on the hard drive than it should.Heck a full back up takes up to 80 gigs of my 1 TB external drive.

Thanks, I won't worry about it anymore then. I notice that even with Run With Highest Privileges checked, there STILL aren't any new points being created. But that's OK. I'll just create one manually. I need to replace the one I last created because I didn't realise at that time that I had malware on the system, that I've since gotten rid of.
