with Firefox. how do I know if I am using 'in private' mode browsing ?
It says in help page that a purple mask is supposed to appear, but even when I click on 'open a new private window' that symbol is not present at the top of my screen

Thank you, wiile e coyote !

I saw that help page, but I didn't read all of it until you stressed it ! In the distant past, I now remember that I did default to private mode browsing

    The relevant section is
"Important: When Firefox is set to Never remember history you won't see a purple mask at the top of each window, even though you are effectively in Private Browsing mode. To restore normal browsing, go to your Privacy & Security OptionsPreferences and set Firefox to Remember history."

No such thing as a dumb question.

    No problem.
