I've seen plenty of file shredders out there, but they all want to only shred specified files or folders. What I'm looking for is a free space shredder: a utility that scans the HD for free space, and shreds the free space (also known as wiping). A free one is preferred. Any links or file names will be appreciated! Thanx!

My favourite is still CCleaner. It's quick, it cleans out most temporary drive space, has a good registry cleaner, and an uninstaller that lets you remove programs from your PC. I also use Webroot's Window Washer, which is good, but I've had to configure it to remove all the files I want it to remove. If either of the suggestions above can clean or be set to clean the Prefetch and Temp folders in WINDOWS along with your Temporary Internet Files, then you probably don't need Window Washer.

Yeah, I'm familiar with CCleaner (and I use it daily!) but that's not what I'm looking for. I need a shredder (shredding means that any data shredded is deleted beyond ALL forms of recovery, usually to Dept. Of Defense standards. Shredding is also known as 'wiping') that will scan the hard drive for free space. Any tiny iota or speck of data found in any free space on the hard drive needs to be shredded/wiped. It would probably be more efficient if the program just shredded all free space instead of checking for data remnants and shredding those when found. It should just shred ALL free space regardless of whether there's bits of data or not. So, does anyone know of such an app? Freeware is preferred (of course), but not mandatory. And Blueheeler: I checked your link and it's not quite what I need. It looks like the app would be ideal to use AFTER the drive has been wiped; it doesn't look like it does any actual wiping itself tho'... I will keep the link however. Thanx!
So, anyone know of anything that will fit the description and shred the free space? Thanx in advance for any links, app names, ideas, whatever ;)

I’m pretty sure that all three of these wipe/shredders are still available as freeware:

    Eraser - http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/
    BCWipe - http://www.jetico.com/
    File Shredder 2.0 - http://www.fileshredder.org/

Eraser 5.84 is available here at Major Geeks.

Please Note: Warning to those who’ve never used this type of software: Read the directions very carefully before using this type of software. Files are destroyed beyond recovery. Using specialized software, tricks or hacks cannot bring the shredded/wiped files back.

    Good Luck!

    Hi hopper,

i read about this in a magazine and downloaded it a couple of months back.
tho' ive not got round to using it yet as ive been busy.
    and yes it is freeware.
the author does state that you will not be able to recover any data from the disc after you have used it.
    hope this helps. :)

Thanx guys! There's quite a few links and apps for me to chew on for a bit... I'll check 'em out and post what I find in case someone else out there is looking for something similar...
    Thanx Again!

    Hi,

I've just downloaded and run "nCleaner", which does exactly what you want (amongst other things!) - it takes all of the free space on the drive and shreds it all. The only downside is that in order to do this you can't have any other applications running, as it takes all of the free space and freezes it whilst it is being shredded - time consuming if you have a big drive or partition. The other functions in the tool (shredding logs and temporary files) is a bit rough - I'd use cCleaner or Cleanup! to securely shred all of the IE/Temp files instead. Likewise, cleaning the Registry with nCleaner highlights loads of 'issues' that you won't want to fix, so stick to cCleaner with the startup option to keep on top of things.

    Hi,

Yes, there are shredders out there, but you have to drag the files you want shredded into them before they will be properly erased. What this guy is after is something that will effectively format all of the free space on your disk (i.e. shredding all of the unused sectors where deleted files might be sitting which could be recovered later). nCleaner does this.

CCleaner and Cleanup! only shred the files they are deleting. If the user has deleted temp files (from within the Browser, for example), these will not be shredded and so could be recovered later by undeletes or other utilities. Running nCleaner will shred this free space, making all of theses segments unrecoverable, which is what this guy is looking for. It takes a while, as it is effectively a 7-pass format of the free space on your disk!

Hey Craig, THANX! That app you linked to is EXACTLY what I need! Thanx! All the other links (yes, I do appreciate everyone's help and suggestions) were for programs that would clean selected folders or files, or just the temp/junk files. It took a while, but thanx again. Just what I needed.
