Greetings peeps, A quandary that I've been living with for months. Win 10 64 bit happily running on an old Motherboard. Originally installed XP on her. Runs on a Intel SSD with 4GM RAM. I have enclosed a snapshot of my HWINO64 summary.
    HWINO64.jpg

I run AVG anti virus and frequently scan Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition.

    The problem.

The desktop doesn't shut down properly. Windows shuts down as it should and closes. This causes my monitor to switch off. But the fans are still on.

Not much of a problem because I can easily pull the power cord from the computer case. A little annoying but I have tried ...

    The Quandary.

When I run a different operating system on the PC. I do so by installing bootable media from the USB drive. An interesting change occurs.

If I shut down from Puppy the computer turns off completely.

    Any thoughts?

    Metta,

It's possible that a specific BIOS setting isn't compatible with W10, is there anything in the Events logs around shutdown/boot to give clues?

    I opened
but really didn't have a clue what I was looking for.
I think I will look for Bios settings.
It is an old 'pute. I'm surprised it works 64 bit Windows 10.
The Bios only has updates to Windows 7.
I really don't want to hurt her...

It's only the logs created in the final minutes of the shutdown and in the first few minutes after startup that contain Errors and Warnings that you need to look at and/or refer to us here for help on.

    Hello again.
I have just Shut down the computer. Pulled the cable from the case. Replaced it and rebooted.
I can open view events log but I don't know what to look for?
    Apologies.

Take note of the shutdown and restart times, concentrate on any errors/warnings in the System logs from those time periods, just copy/paste the details here and someone can take a look at them.

On Win7, I expand "Event Viewer" and "Custom Views". Then I display "Administrative Events". Be patient for it to populate.

I have to say how shocked I am. So many errors...

Satrow will probably have better info than me, when he gets back on. Give us some idea on the types of errors and how many each, since last bootup; i.e. Critical, Error, and Warning. Which ones repeated repeatedly show up after each restart. I found events are usually involved with
three things: Bios, Services, and Application Programs. To minimize service issues, run services as needed. Black Viper's guide is a good help to configure services: http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-10-service-configurations/:)
BIOS problems may or not be acceptable. I get an Event 6 error every start, in that my OS Performance Power Management doesn't agree with the BIOS firmware (a known issue). I accept this because my hardware is very old for the OS and I don't want take a chance on a failed BIOS flash really messing things up, if I could even find one, now.:(
My advice for programs is to never auto start things you really don't need. This means I limit auto start to mainly security programs. A handy tool to check startups is here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/whatinstartup.html
I start other applications as I need them and close them after I don't need them, before I shutdown the computer ("graceful shutdowns").;)
Seldom do I ever see a Critical:eek:It usually occurs with an unexpected shutdown and restart. Fortunately they never repeat for me after I repair the originating issue for the shutdown.:p

Sorry I've been away. I turned off the desktop. Waited intil 16.42 and booted her up.
When I go to event viewer/admin I get the following...

    I'm a little confused.

    Apologies for the being absent.
I was installing Mint on a USB stick. Placed USB drive into Front USB2 slot and rebooted. For some reason it didn't boot up. Perhaps I should have waited longer. Removed the USB stick and rebooted. Error message before it got to the Windows login.
Managed to return to a backup I made a month ago. Thank you Acronis. Been updating and creating new images.
I'll give it another day or two before I make any more changes...
    regards,
