shut down problem

ok this is hard to describe,
If i boot up computer and use it for aprox. 5 min or less all is ok. if i use for longer when i try to shut down this is what happens.
click start , click turn off computer,then nothing happens. just get hourglass.
i can shut down by ctrl+alt+del then click shut down tab. any ideas?

Need more information please,

What is the operating system?

Do you have all Service Packs and critical updates installed?

If you leave it to shut down normally for long enough, does it ever get there?

What applications are running in the background? ETC

HERE is a troubleshooting guide if you are using XP.

 

sometimes if you do nothing on you putor for a while, the shutdown will fail. I always go into a program then out. My putor will shut down fine after that. Are you using XP?

 

sorry for the lack of info.
there is a long story to this problem, i will try to keep i short as possable
i use win xp home ed.
this problem started after i recieved help from microsoft tech.
this is how it started, i was installing a microsoft update that i downloaded and the power went out. when i booted up the next time, i couldnt type anywhere.( no curser) he had me do all kinds of regestry checks (i couldnt tell you what they were) then he had my remove service pack 2 and re install it. that fixed the typing issue and i thought all was ok.
however after using computer for a hour or so i found that i couldnt shut down normally. when i do ctrl+ alt+ del nothing shows that is running(blank box) also when i do ctrl+ alt+ del and click shut down , says saving settings, windows shuting down , then takes about 3 min to actually turn off.
if i try to shut down normally i never get box to shut down ( reboot ,shut down, stand by) just hour glass .

Read the link I supplied and try it's suggestions, it has the probable solution and describes the symptom you are experiencing.

It may also be a service running in the background or a driver.

HERE is a guide to disabling unneeded services. (nVidia display driver service is notorious for this)

 

oh, i forgot to mention this, microsoft tech had me create new user account.
dont know if it matters but i wanted to include this also.

 

i do have nvidia video card

 

Then disable it (the driver) in services, it's not needed.

Follow the steps in both links I supplied.

Insomniac, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I did the things you suggested in your response, shut down issue is resolved!!!!!!!!!
I waited a few days to make sure it still is ok and it seems to be fine.
