    Aaaarrrgggghhhh

I'm getting the BSOD upon shut down (it does NOT happen in Safe Mode which probably means it's a driver issue... but how to find which one?)

    Error Code:

    0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x8060e31b, 0xf7972a54, 0x00000000)

    Operating System?

Does it only happen when shutting down?

The system has to be Windows 5 (2k/XP/2k3) because Windows 4 (95/98/ME) doesn't generate error codes like this on a BSOD.

Your bug check code is KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED with STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION. That means a kernel mode (real mode) program such as a device driver or possibly an antivirus client tried to read or write to memory where it wasn't allowed to.

To figure out exactly which driver, you'd have to debug the minidump... but I'm not someplace where I can do that for a few weeks.

I can tell you that the most likely culprits are video drivers and chipset drivers.

You could also try running a chkdsk c: /f.

I tried to reply to this yesterday but MG wasn't talking to me.:D :p

Are you sure the error ends with 8E, not BE? If it is BE then

Thank you all for your assistance. I LOVE the MajorGeeks site and you are why :)

    1) Yes it only happens during shut down.
    2) How do I debug the minidump?
    3) How do I know which drivers are the culprit?
    4) Yes it is 8E and not BE (I shut it down again to double check)

Last night, in desperation, I D/L and installed Registry Mechanic. It ran when I rebooted a few mins ago
and came back with the following message:
    -----------------------------------------------------------

The system has recovered from a serious error.
A log of this error has been created.
For more information about this error, click here.....

    WHICH TAKES YOU HERE:
    Error signature
    BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : 8060E31B BCP3 : F7962A54 BCP4 : 00000000
    OSVwe : 5_1_2600 SP : 1_0 Product : 768_1
To view techinical information about the error report, click here....

    WHICH TAKES YOU HERE:
The following files will be included in this error report:
    c:\windows\Minidump\Mini050706-01.dmp
    c:\Docume~1\Owner~1.Lin\Locals~1\Temp\Wer1.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml
    -----------------------------------------------------------

So since it said "recovered" I rebooted again to see if the problem was solved. It was not. I got the
same BSOD but this time I recorded the entire message JUST in case someone recognizes an issue IN
the message, in addition to the code:

    Dumping physical memory to disk.
If this is the first time seeing this error.....
Check for adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the STOP message disable the driver or check
with manufacturer for driver updates - try changing the video adapter.
Check with the hardware vendor for BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or
shadowing. Use Safemode to disable components.
    Tech info:
*** STOP : (error codes recorded in first post)
    Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk [then countdown begins]
    -----------------------------------------------------------

Does that offer any valuable info I'm just not understanding?

1/ "Check for adequate disk space."?

2/ "If a driver is identified in the STOP message disable the driver or check
with manufacturer for driver updates - try changing the video adapter."?

3/ "Check with the hardware vendor for BIOS updates."?

Have you tried any of the above?

Number one is easy to figure out. Right click on the drive/properties & see what is what.

Number two you will have to check the website where you vidoe card is made.

Number three can be dangerous but if done properly will give you no problems......might even fix the problem you now have but leave it to last.
