Before I begin, thank you to anyone who will have the time and or patience to deal with what I am about to ask help for. I don't know a lot about computers so I ask that you walk me through the situation and I will try to give whatever information you need to help me.

I built a new computer and took from the old one my main HD and made the one i have been using as back up the main drive, so that I could give it to my friend. Upon taking it to his house and hooking it up it started having problems powering up. It would turn on for a few seconds and then shut off. This had not been an issue before so i was confused. I had an old sony 52x cd rom that i had not used in years that i hooked up for him and thought that maybe it was causing the problem. I took it to a friends house to see if he could help. Not only did he not have any power issues but he was able to wipe the drive and install windows for my friend which i had not been able to do seeing as how if the pc stayed on longer than a few seconds and i tried to use the cd drive it would then shutoff.
Rather than try to figure out if the cd rom drive was broken, I instead gave my friend my dvd burner planning to order a new one for myself anyway. We took the computer home and when we connected it it started giving us problems again. That, for whatever reason, eventally subsided but whenever I try to use the dvd drive, it freezes the computer which then has to be reset. This makes installing anything tedious. I checked device manager and it said everything is working fine. When i use windows explorer I can see everything in the disk but if i try to access any of it im in trouble. After trying to install drivers for my wireless network card for 2 days, i finally got through and was able to install it and get internet access. I dont really know where to go from here. I will give some basic specs and wait for a reply on what you need to know...

    western digital 40 gig hd
    radeon 9600
    lite on dvdrw sohw 1693s
    linksys wireless card

thats what i have in terms of hardware
the computer was reformated and has windows xp pro, avg free, and the linksys drivers on it.

    Let the games begin.....

If I understand correctly, when you try to connect either a CD drive or a DVD drive to one friend's computer, the computer shuts off. Are you sure that friend has a large enough power supply in his computer to support an optical drive? That might be the reason it appears as any additional hardware installed creates problems.

Perhaps I should rephrase, when either is connected and i put a disk in, it will attempt to read it and instead freeze the computer.
Once in a blue moon I am able to use My Computer or Windows Explorer to see the contents on the disk. That works in like one in every 30 attempts.
That being the case I dont think it is a power supply problem.
Also consider the fact that like i stated I was using all of this with a different HD before and I never had this problem.

Oh, and thank you for replying!

It is posible you have settings left over from incomplete uninstalls of earlier cd installations. Drivers and filter checking can be tricky so go a little at a time.

Open device manager and on the driver tab of the cd device properties click driver details as in pic 1

You will see some microsoft (digitally signed) and perhaps some non microsoft listed as in pic 2

Make notes of these or screen shots.

The go to the details tab and spin the upper box down to the three filter entries as in pic3.
    Again notes or shots.

Sometimes an uninstall leaves pointers in registry after the file is removed. this can cause hangs and worse and is particularly prevalent in CD/DVD devices.

Well I've looked around trying to get more info about my problem but it seems as though anything involving dvd roms and shutdown has to do with burning, whereas my problem happens simply when it reads a cd. Anyway, hopefully someone has some info that can help me...

What types of data cable and jumper settings are you using for all drives?

If your driver list is complete you have no unwanted extras.

The driver list is complete. As for the other, if you are asking what I think you are asking then I am using IDE cables for both the hard drive and dvd rom and the jumper settings for both are set to master (ie no jumper).

Most of the drives I've seen use the no jumper as the slave position. Please check carefully.

What sort of ide cables are you using and are they on the same or different channels.

The HD definately says that no jumper is for the master. The DVD doesnt have any markings. They are on seperate IDE cables. I dont know how to find out what kind they are but if you tell me i will look.

OK I assume you have one of these and have used setting 2 (single) on the list? You should also try the master jumper position (setting3).

The attachment also shows a ribbon cable with the positions on the cable you should set the drives on. The master goes at the end. There are two sorts of ide ribbon. The earlier has 40 wires and is much thicker and ribbier than the later ones, which are finer and have 80 wires. the connectors are the same in both cases. Modern hard d rives require the 80 wire to function correctly, Cd/DVD drives will work well with either.

Cd/DVD drives often have the connection and jumper information stamped into the case at the rear.

I can see this information and a jumper in the picture attached.

I have the 80 ide cable. I tried switching the jumpers. No difference.

If anyone else has any ideas I'd love to hear them seeing as how it still does not work...

Around about 2000 I had a Ricoh combined CD RW / DVD Reader. This came with installation drivers and Nero. I installed it to an MSI motherboard system running W98SE. The drivers CD autoran and installed bootime adware/spyware. which I could not get rid of. The Drive also repeatedly locked up the system, a bit like yours. Each time I had to remove it from device manager and the board, uninstall all drivers and Nero - eventually I gor so fed up I sent it to the recycle bin. I also wrote to Ricoh in Japan and received a replacemnt Cd without the adware. I have also come across Sony (and Sonic) software doing this and one one occasion Pioneer.

I have also seen this locking behaviour when several incompatible third party software programs for CD/DVD are loaded on the same computer.

I think this is due to each program installing a slightly different dll with the same name and windows serving the wrong one at times. I forget the technical term for this, perhaps Adrynalyne will remind me?
