I'm working on a 'no name' laptop, and it's not shutting down completely. I click Start > Turn Off > Shut Down and it goes thru the motions until the final blue Windows XP screen where it says 'Windows is shutting down...' and it just sits there, the hard drive stops spinning, and the mouse pointer stops responding.... I ran sfc /scannow and Dial-A-Fix without success.... Anyone have any ideas????? Thanx!

Try letting it take its time (maybe several hours) to shut down. Once it has done that it may reset. Otherwise look in event viewer to see what is hanging. Check that windows power control and bios power control are compatible. Delete hiberfil.sys from outside windows and restart.

Problem solved. It had to do with the user profile not completely unloading itself from the registry and related hives. Here's a link if anyone ever has a similar problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837115/en-us There's also a link to a fix-it tool in that KB article that will take care of the problem....
