    Hello,
I have done a little research on my shutdown problem and tried the steps at the microsoft support page http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810903 but am still having problems so thought maybe somebody here might be able to help me. From what I have read it is a fairly common problem that can occur when you install XP on an older system after a format and don't have all your bios or drivers set right. It is the standard "It is now safe to turn off yoru computer message".

I started to have problems with my hard drive so I bought a new 160gb western digital drive and did a fresh install of XP Pro on an older computer that is running a Athlon 650mhz cpu on it. I got the SP1 service pack and all my updates done, and have set about trying to troubleshoot this error. It is more annoying then troublesome so I am trying to work it out.

According to the MS support page, the first step is to enable the APM through the power options on the control pannel.
    1. Click the APM tab.

Note If you are using multiple monitors, the APM tab may not be available.
This APM tab is not showing up for me. I am not using multiple monitors and my video card is an old Geforce 2 GTS Pro. Should I be able to change this through the video card somehow? My new computer has a Raedon 9700 Pro and i can change settings like this through the ATI display Panel, but don't have anything like this for my Geforce card.

The third step in the troubleshooting is to make sure the compter is ACPI compliant and I followed those steps. My computer is just listed as a Standard PC so I went to step 5.

<LI>If Microsoft ACPI Driver is not listed:

In the NT APM/Legacy Support branch of the device tree, you should see the item NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node. It should show a red X to indicate that it is disabled.

Right-click NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node, and then click Enable.

After you perform these steps, Windows should shut down properly. The ACPI Driver is not listed, but neither was the NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node so I am not sure what to do now. I am sure it is something driver or setting related since I just did a reformat and installed XP Pro, I am just not sure what else to check. I also installed a fresh copy of XP Pro on my newer system that is a MSI mb with a 2.5 cpu and do not have this problem shutting down.

Sorry for the long post but thought I would get specific to try and further narrow it down for you troubleshooters.

    Thanks in advance
