Shutdown/standby problems

Hi everyone, I'm new here.

I have a tricky problem involving shutting down and going into standby.

I just bought some new hardware.

2.8ghz Core 2 Duo
Gigabyte EP43-UD3L motherboard
Asus ATi 4350 video card
4GB of 1066 OCZ memory

It's all at stock speed/voltage. No overclock (yet).

I also have a 320GB western digital hard drive and a Thermaltake 430w PSU.

I have two problems.

1. The computer will not fully shut off. Right after the "shutting down" message, the screen turns off, the hard drive stops, but the fans stay running and the power light stays on. I have to hold the power button to shut it off. When I start it again, windows does NOT say "windows was not properly shut down..."


2. The computer will not fully enter standby. Again, the screen goes off and the hard drive stops. I cannot resume from this partial standby. I must again reset or hold the power button. This time, windows does say "not shut down properly..."


#1 problem happens in windows XP 64 bit, windows 7 RC 64 bit and Kubuntu 8.10, with almost identical behavior.

#2 problem definitely happens in XP and windows 7, I did not try standby in Linux.


I reset the BIOS to "optimized defaults" and made sure the APCI setting in the BIOS was set to S3, not S1.
