shutting down

I am not sure if this is the right spot to post this, but here goes. My computer seems to be ignoring my commands to shut down. I select the "turn off computer" button and then either the "turn off" confirmation or the "restart" button and then the box disappears and nothing else happens. It doesn't act like it is trying to comply, it just goes being on. Where do I begin to look on this one?

Two suggestions: I have a similar thing happen on my PC (rarely, but it does happen); if you have a memory optimizer running (like FreeRAM XP), shutting it down before turning off the PC works for me. Idea #2: run Dial-A-Fix and check everything in the 'Registration Center'. You can actually check every box if you want, it's impossible to do any harm w/ D-A-F, click 'Go' and let it do its thing. It might take 2-3 minutes. You can download D-A-F for free, right here at 'the Geeks'.... good luck!

This can occur if the automatic power management goes awry.

goto the control panel and check the settings on the power options icon.

A little experimentation will determine if APM is the culprit. Try the action on the advance tab for 'when I press the power buttons' first.

You didn't mention what operating system you use, Win98SE has a bulliten to fix a bug similar to what you describe. It can be had in updateing Win98se.

So, what OS, CPU, whatnot are you using?
