I'm having trouble shutting down my computer, when I go to Start, Shut Down. It freezes on me, I know i have Service pack 2 but i heard there are a couple of glitches on it, but I can't download the patches right, when my computer runs to see if there are any updates it gives me an error

RE2LeonS, I think it will be very difficult for anyone here to be of any assistance without some more detail on your problem. For instance: what error are you receiving? One useful technique is to download patches manually (don't be scared off by that term, it's very user friendly) through the microsoft website:

    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

I think there is a way to do this through browsers other than explorer, but, IMHO it's more trouble than it's worth. So I would recommend using internet explorer for this one particular task.

Speaking very broadly, it has been my experience that the primary cause of freezing is a combination of 1) not enough RAM 2) to many background apps and 3) to much (meaning any) malware.

Check out the "read/run first" thread in the malware section of Major Geeks to deal with the third issue.

There are a number of ways to deal with the second issue, but I personally like win patrol:

If you could post back with some more details on your problem, we could be of far greater assistance.

This is what it says when it tries to run for updates and i've done what they recommended over and over

    "[Error number: 0x80248011]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. Take the following steps to try solving the problem:
    Refresh the page.
In Internet Explorer, delete your Temporary Internet Files by going to the Tools menu and clicking Internet Options.
Close and then re-open Internet Explorer."

So it's multiple problems ...(assuming you are trying the downloads with Internet Explorer ...not some other browser) ....and shut down issues. go to control panel/admin. tools / event viewer / system and tell us what errors you have ...there is usually a link provided with the error for further info.

To fix this error 0x80248011. try the following in the command prompt. The
    > steps to follow are given below.
    >
    > Click on Start -> run -> type command "cmd" and command prompt will appear.
    > After you are in command prompt try the following commands.
    >
    > 1) net stop wuauserv
    > 2) cd /d %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
    > 3) rd /s DataStore
    > 4) net start wuauserv
    >
    > Try to run windows update after these steps and let me know if this helps.
