Side By Side Configuration Errors Have Crippled My PC

Good Evening to you friendly Pro's out there.

Over the past 4 months my PC has started to get a large amount of Blue Screen crashes. This was followed by disk checks upon reboot. Then a few programs would not launch due to their side by side configuration being incorrect. As the days went on this bled into almost all of my software / programs.

I cannot open any programs whatsoever aside from calculator / notepad / IE (which is stuck at IE 9 so I can't load many websites properly if at all) and cannot update any existing programs. Basically everything I try to open has a side by side configuration error.

I've gone through a few Youtube video tutorials and followed them step by step with no fix. I'm at a point where I'm looking to backup all of my media to the cloud and reformat. I'd rather not do that however if possible but I have no idea how else to resolve this. Web searches don't really bring up too many helpful instructions either. MS.com has other people who have had the issue but the instructions are eitehr confusing or don't seem to match what I'm going through.

Before I go the backup / reformat route is there any suggestions / thoughts on how to resolve this and stop this error from occurring?

    Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the double post. I couldn't find an edit OP option.

    I'm running Windows 7 home - 64bit.

    Thanks again!

Be sure to read the warnings. If your system is an OEM (like Dell, HP, etc) and all you have is restore/recovery discs, you can't use that method.

    Hi there,

So I ran the system file checker and at 55% got the message: "...found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

As per the instructions in the guide, I needed to find the corrupt file in the cbs.log and then once identified, find a replacement of a non-corrupt version.

When I went to access cbs.log to find the corrupt file(s), I got an error telling me "Access is denied".
I attempted to right click to open as administrator, but the option wasn't there.

Any suggestions on how to move forward to find the corrupt file so I can replace it/them?

    Thanks again!

Ack, I didn't know to look down further as I hadn't gotten past the steps yet.

So I ran command prompt in admin mode: entered - findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

Then I opened the .txt file that was now on my desktop - the .txt file was blank.

Now, to be fair, since I last did the system file checker, my PC crashed and restarted while I was at work sooo maybe thats why its blank? Unless I missed other instructions.

    Cheers,

    - C
