What exactly happens when he tries to Download it?
Is it timing out? Does he have any problems downloading anything else?
Do you have any parental blocks for certain sites on?

it says it has downloaded, but when you try to access it a box comes up saying error. we have not had any other download problems. i do not have parental blocks, (or at least i dont think there are....but if there were wouldnt a box appear saying that or similar?). i am going to try again and post a more complete summery of what happens and when. i just thought i would see if anybody else was having problems with it before i wasted my time. as far as i am aware it is a safe site (safe-ish?). much aloha

Yeah the site is safe enough and I used to play it quite alot. I have not heard of anyone having issues dl the client. Are you trying to donwload from the silkroad website? If so it might be worth trying out another download location like www.gamershell.com (I think they still have it there) If you are not then try to download from silkroad themselves.

1 more thing to try and do is to download the relevent patches to, apply them and then run the game.

Does your PC meet the minimum specs required to run the game?

(no wonder my son is having probs lol)

Have you tried the direct link?

    http://joymaxfull.nefficient.com/joymax/SRO_Client/SilkroadOnlinevGlobalOfficial_v1.02.exe

Only 503 megabytes. :) If ye are on dial-up, then yes, it could take a few "days" to download. :(

ok, its downloading now. when i went to delete the program from 'add/remove programs' after failing to get it to work, it was by far the biggest file on there. its possible that jacob has downloaded it several times, but would it all 'join together' if that was the case, or would the program simply appear more than once. we have dsl, so it shouldnt take hours. i will let you know what happens as soon as its finished. loads of aloha and thanks for the help.
ps, i dont understand the spec thing.

Is your computer a custom computer (I.E. a computer you built yourself) or is a computer you bought from an OEM, I.E. (Dell, compaq, etc). If OEM, what model did you buy?

512 Ram is the recommended ram you should have.

DirectX is what you need to run the game, its what runs 3d games without getting to technical about it. Download that install, it is safe and not spyware. A patch is basically a small program that fixes any bugs or problems in the main program. All software has small fixes applied to them after the software is released. So Install Silkroad, download the patch and run it. It will automatically instal and fix the game for you.

There is basically 2 main vendors of graphics cards, these are ATI and Nvidia (Geforce cards) depending on the type of the graphics card you have will need to update the drivers for your particular card.

Similary with the GFX Cards there are 2 chipset vendors on motherboards, depending on what you have you can update this.

PS sorry for not putting in all the information at once. Just a bit busy at work at the moment

im at 70% download at the moment. so when that is done i go back to silkroadonline and download the direct x bit and the patch yes? (the 'manual patch file, not the main board patch i assume) i dont know what type of graphics card i have, or how to find out. ditto chipset.

When That is done download the directx and install then to be sure run the windows update from your start menu, this will also update Direct X if needed plus any other important windows fixes.

    download the manual patch.

Install the main game first, after it has installed (if my memory serves me right) the game will probably launch by itself, if it does close it. Install the manual patch and let itself launch.

It will now try and connect to silkroad online and will download any further updates by itself, once done the game will start giving you an option of different severs to play on. Pick the one he wants to play on or the one his friends play on, bear in mind any character he makes wil only be on that server only, so if goes to a different server he will have to start again.

Give that a go first before we start messing around with graphic drivers etc.

For future reference though for the graphics card, if you right click on an empty space of your desktop and go down to properties - click settings tab it should say under the monitor picture your monitor name (or default monitor) on nvidia 7900gtx for example. If it doesnt click on the Advanced button and then the adaptor tab. It will tell you there what graphics card you have. If it doesn't say ati xxxxxx or nvidia xxxxxx you might not have a graphics card and be using the motherboards onboard graphics. If this is the case you will not be able to run the game anyway unfortunatly.

When you click the ati or nvidia buttons on silkroad it will take you to their respective sites and from there navigate to your card and operating system (most likely windows XP) and download the appropiate driver.

For your chipset In Windows 2000/XP, please perform the following:

Right click on My Computer and select properties. Next click on the "hardware" tab and then click on the "device manager" tab. Once inside the device manager click on "system devices" to expand the tree. The type of chipset will be listed within this list. Such chipsets may include, but are not limited to: VIA, NForce, ALi Magik, SiS, Intel etc. I suggest you do some google searching on updating your motherboard and chipsets on how to update them before doing so.

Hope this helps and gets your boy up and running.

well i downloaded the game, and the direct x, but the patch was for a different version and wouldnt 'do it' the game loaded and updated, and when we pressed 'start' another thing downloaded (god knows what that was, but it was a small box in the corner. then we got a box saying:_

then when we clicked 'ok' we got another box labled 'sro-client.exe' that informed us ' sro-client has encountered a problem and needs to close.' (i couldnt 'capture' the box as it wouldnt allow me to click on anything untill i had clicked 'ok') this is apparently what happens each time.

Dont worry about the box that opens in the corner as you launch the game. That is a program called gameguard it protects you from potential hackers in the game and stealing your items in the game.

After some searching around I found this on the Silkroadonline forums
    http://www.silkroadonline.net/sro_b...?t=25804&sid=18aa2486cff2b1a3f6aacd8b5dc2f532

It appears that you need the latest drivers for your Graphics card. Find out what gfx card you have from the wats I explained in my earlier post and then go to the relevant site to download the latest drivers.

This site has a simple step by step instructions on changing your graphics card drivers.

thankyou dread. at least i now know that its not just me. from what i can gather i have a VIA/S3G unichrome graphics and an ACPI chipset. these are microsoft (i think) and i not sure how they can be updated. if i click the properties of the adapter there is a box to click for updates, but it then said there wasnt any updates for that driver. :(

BTW on the 'add/remove programs' list, silk road is 1,323.00MB. presumably the updates and stuff triple the size.

Well, ye downloaded 500+ megs, this is typically compressed. When ye install it, it typically gets much bigger.

For that error ye got, try downloading and intsalling the visual c++ 2005 runtime:

Also, the latest version of dx9c is found here:

after some searching around it sounds like you are running an onboard graphics chip. Unfortunatly you will not be able to run this game without a graphics card.
