I haven't installed this thing yet on my Win XP Pro SP2 system but I just now visited http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA012013211033.aspx?WT.mc_id=ION , via Firefox, and I see a statement that, if I proceed with viewing of the Demo, Silverlight will be installed.

Is this thing harmless? Will I notice any impact on system/browser performance due to installing it? Can it be uninstalled?

This thing is 100% harmless. You don't have to worry. You can uninstall it from add\remove programs. This thing falls right in-between a small app and a plugin, because it can only be used from an Internet browser, including Firefox. That is what i use to download stuff from Microsoft.

    Hi usafvet

Not noticed any issues with internet speed with Silverlight ( which is MSFTs form of Flash/Java for customising webpages and gfx ) at all, Microsoft is having a puch to have many of their pages all in Sliverlight and at times if you goto Windows Update/Download you may get a popup to ask if you wish to try the new download site layout.

So it will only come into play if a site is programmed with sliverlight gfx, if not generally your prompted to install it or if you dont install it the site just looks plain menus but it usable.

    Some sample sites http://silverlight.net/showcase/default.aspx

    Halo, thanks for that info.

I just installed it. http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/resources/install.aspx#instruct said:

"After a successful completion in Internet Explorer, the browser page will be automatically updated. In Firefox, you will need to restart the browser. You can now start using Silverlight."

But, the installation was immediately confirmed by http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/resources/install.aspx and I was able to immediately play the Demo at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA012013211033.aspx?WT.mc_id=ION without restarting Firefox. So, apparently, the stated restarting requirement for Firefox is not true, at least not in all cases. Of course, I'll be closing and restarting it sometime soon anyway.

Yeah I noticed same in that I didnt need to restart, I think its a generalisation and similar to the install instructions that say disable your AV, in many cases these days its not needed.

Think they should have changed the instructions to read "you may need to restart browser" but also at times the instructions may need updating as changes to say Firefox in updates may have taken out the need for the restart.
