Similiar programs to Audacity?

    I find Audacity confusing especially when it comes to adding tracks. My friend recorded the rythm guitar part (in mono) and I'm trying add the lead guitar part on the left channel and after that the other friend will add harmonica to the right channel.
    Years ago I used to do this kind of things with a 4track Tascam cassete recorder.
    Any freeware programs similiar to the Tascam? I'm poor(old & cheap)so pay/shareware is a no-go.
