    Hi Guys

I am looking for help in selecting an idiot proof back up system. I travel extensively and dont choose to use the cloud back up facilities. Therefore my laptop carries my whole life.
I have Windows 10, 64 bit with one SSD and a 2 TB hard drive with 4 partitions. I want a very simple system to back up the whole computer at the weekend. A free programme would be beneficial, but not worried either way. All help appreciated.

I know how you feel about backing up stuff.

I use a WD my passport that is portable and it works well for laptops for extra storage space if needed.

    Hi Sarg,
Thanks for the info, but I have all the hardware 4-5 hard drives, I just have nothing to organise and simplify the operation.

There are two very different aspects to backup - backing up your system and backing up your data - and each requires a different approach. To backup your Windows system and software you need imaging software though this only needs doing periodically, say every month or two. For backing up your data there is a huge choice but my preference is for programs that keep a second copy of your files on a different drive and keep the two in sync, either automatically or as necessary. The whole process is made simpler if you take the time first to move your personal profile folders - Docs, Pics and so on, to a data drive. With your partitioned 2Tb HDD you are already set up to do that. Your data needs backing up as often as it changes, so daily is usually good.

For imaging software my vote goes to Macrium Reflect and for data backup I use SyncBack Free though, as I said, there are many alternatives.

Many thanks Earthling. Will have a good look. I just want the simplest operation.

I'd be the last person to discourage you but tbh I don't think creating an effective backup regime is really simple. It does require some time and effort if you want it to be effective.

Prepared to put in the effort if, once set up, its a simple repetitive procedure.

Both of the programs I've recommended can be set to run your backups automatically to a schedule, or you can run them manually as necessary.
