Sounds sumb but I am having a problem with a simple network.
I am running my pc1 to my pc2 then to my sattelite internet. Its all ethernet 10/100.
I dont have a router nor a hub and was wondering if it was still possible to share files without either.
If it is possible, how :p

    Thanks

Yes, it's possible. But not ideal. Your better off at least putting a small hub or switch ($10 to $20). A router with a built in switch would be even better. And one with a firewall would be primo. However, if you insist ......

PC1 would have a NIC installed, connected with a crossover cable to PC2. PC2 will have 2 NICs installed, with the second NIC going to you sat (first one goes to PC1 via crossover). Whether if you need a crossover or not depends on your sat hardware and config.

PC1 will have to have a static address (192.168.10.10, for example). PC2 will have to have a static address (192.168.10.11) on the NIC going to PC1. The second NIC in PC2 will be either static or DHCP, depending on your sat setup. On PC2, you need to set it so that it will forward IP request between the two NICS, and will function almost like a router. It needs to pass traffic from PC1 to the sat.

Only problem you got now is that PC1 depends on PC2 to be "up" in order to function.

    Thanks . Makes sense.
Im using Home edition on both pc's.
I could use a router but im trying to avoid that situation.
My sat is a USB modem so the need for 2 nics is obselete at this point.
Any more information would be great.
Also the fact that the other pc has to be up in order for it to be working properly doesnt bother, because both Pc's are always on.
    Thanks.
