I would simply like to play a video, on my "new" machine.

I can't understand why the robot..errr, rather, the "person" who designed this, couldn't simply have had ONE of these MANY menu links/choices/selections very simply READ:

"CLICK HERE"! (or something to the complex effect of such) -

    :confused ? :confused

    Thanks in advance.

What you show is a list of files, possibly on a DVD. Do you have any video player installed that can play these files?

    Google for "play vob files".

Windows 8's media player does NOT natively support playing DVDs. Download the KMPlayer (my favorite), or VLC to play DVDs.

Yes thank you...it is a DVD...and I have Windows Media Player (Windows 8)...that should work, yes please?

    Okay..nothin' simple any more...

Though KMPlayer is more recently updated vs VLC (March 2013 vs. Dec 2012), KMPlayer doesn't seem to mention Windows 8 in it's "OS Required" list, whereas VLC does (KMPlayer = "Win7/Vista/2K/XP" vs. VLC = "Win 8\ Win 7\ Vista\ XP").

Forgive me for asking...in the past I would have simply plowed-ahead, and asked questions later (if necessary)...I just can't afford (in more ways than one) to do that any longer.

KM Player is good but VLC is by far the most popular
So if you think are going to need help and be asking questions in the future I recommend you install VLC, there will be a lot of people who might be able to help.
    Also there is:

    VLC Support and Help Center

    VLC Forum

i am still simply trying to view ("watch") a DVD (or a "video" or whatever disks are being referred to as these days), on this "new" laptop.

I am including two screenshots...there was a third screenshot, which is now buried/lost in my pictures (that's how many I have taken in reference to problems trying to work with this new machine, and I haven't even gotten to many of the problems I seem to be having).

Should "USE AUTOPLAY FOR ALL MEDIA AND DEVICES" be selected or not? (I recall reading a couple years ago to *NOT* have this selected (or something similar to this)...I really almost don't care any longer..I would simply like things to work on a brand new computer.

At one point I got the video ("DVD") to DISPLAY in this VLC Player software-program (and that is the missing screenshot that I mentioned), but I couldn't seem to figure-out how to get beyond the options menu of the video (to actually watch the movie), and now that is not even displaying . . . . ?

Considering WMP doesn't have a codec in Windows 8 for DVDs, I'd say your assessment is correct.

IS there an option to right click the disk and play with VLC? I don't have Windows handy right now to check.

Please disregard...I fiddled with it (Media>Open>(Advanced?)>Disc>Play) and got it to work...very, very simple PROCESS...a mere 6, 7...89 clicks, and VIOLA! Was watching the movie in no time...only took 2-to-3 days to figure-it-out...

    Thanks.
