Since installing Win10 when released, amongst other things, my DVD wont play or read, I would like to have the CD ROM/DVD drive work again, in "This PC", I get as far as clicking on the DVD drive and the disc tray opens and when a disc is placed in the tray and then shut, I have no commands to work with.

I have downloaded a number of software programs to try and read the DVD, no success at all and most of the software I wasn't happy with the procedures and the monthly costs, I am prepared to pay for a working program on a yearly basis, not monthly.

I am trying to achieve copying from DVD to USB, so I can send a USB stick to a mate in the States.

I have an old ASUS laptop running Win10 that I was able to copy using" This PC" and the DVD has been transferred in files, I was hoping to transfer the video as a complete unit.

Thank you for any help forth coming.

Is there a drive letter associated with the CD drive?
If not then open Disk Management (Right click Start and chose it from the list)
Note the CD-ROM label. Low left on the page. Right Clicking on the icon/words - Change drive letter and paths.
Choosing a drive letter might be all you need to do.

    Good luck,
    s.

Was that picture taken while you had a disk in? What happens when you have a disc in and double click on the drive? Does Explorer open? Error? Is it a blank disc

Photo with DVD in the D drive, no difference.
Nothing opens when the drive is activated, as mentioned, if I open "This PC" there is a command section at the top of the window and all of the controls there, the only operative command is "open tray" as mentioned in my original post.

What I am wanting is to have desktop icon that I can click on like in the old days to activate the CD ROM, or right click the desktop and bring up a command line, not to be I guess.

Sorry for not thanking you blokes for your replies previously, many thanks for your suggestions.

A photo of "This PC" showing the DVD icon, when clicked on, this small window opens, after disc is inserted and the tray closed, the small window doesn't close until it is eXed, click on "help me choose a disc" and this open Microsoft Edge which has no relevance to my problem at all.

The command line in "This PC", format, eject and burn are the only commands that will high-lite when the cursor is placed over them.

Just thought I would include these in my post as well, not that this is the way I want to be able to copy a DVD to USB.

You want to copy a dvd to usb, but the disk you put in is blank, maybe? Have you tried it on another computer? This goes back a while, but I think there was an issue if the CD/DVD was not "closed" some systems could not read the disk. Have you tried CDBurnerXP? https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/cdburnerxp.html

I wonder why I would want to try and copy a blank disc????.:D

It is obvious that you haven't read my original post, have a look around the middle and you will see the comment I wrote about using my old ASUS lap top.

Well I tried to download that web address and Norton and Malwarebytes are having a hicky fit, Malwarebytes says that it is corrupted with "ADWARE FUSION CORE" and the download is getting wiped.

I'll google that web address and see what happens.

I managed to download cdburnerxp through google, doesn't seem to be a section to copy from DVD to a flash drive though.

Sorry, sometimes people have a hard time explaining things coherently, they think they have a technical ability when they don't. Like saying "This PC" , when you're likely talking about (File) Explorer..I digress.
According to this statement you have copied the "files", but want "the video as a complete unit" Now I am wondering are you trying to copy a dvd movie? What is this disc, something someone burned? A movie?

I thought that post #6 should have shown what I was trying to explain, you are right, I am not that tech savvy now because the ongoing Windows versions has made me and a lot of older folk lazy and has taken my ability to work Dos from way back, do you remember that period when computers first come out?, we typed to tape to record our endeavors, so now when I have a problem, I ask the younger blokes.

You are right in saying that I am trying to copy a DVD documentary of WW two aircraft to flash drive so I can send to a mate in the States.

I am not really looking for a DVD burner program, but software to transfer from DVD to flashdrive.

And to give myself a kick in the guts, a few weeks ago I binned a number of unused RW discs, which I could have used with the program you suggested.

I started with a VIC 20 at home and used tapes, my high school had a Digital PDP1134... we've come a long way.
Ok, if I am remembering right, Win 10 does not come with DVD playback, so you can download VLC media player to watch that disk. To copy (rip it), since you own the rights to it, ;) You can download Handbrake to rip it to a file that can easily be put on a USB.
If it has DRM (manufacture's copy protection) then you'll need a program to handle that.

Thank you for your time, I have downloaded software you mentioned, I already had VLC, all of the programs didn't show the DVD drive, strange that I downloaded Handbrake to my laptop and this shows the DVD drive when setting up to rip, but not the desktop, it is getting really annoying with the amount of time I have wasted trying to get the desktop to recognize the CD Rom drive.

I have opened device manager a few times and uninstalled the CD Rom drive, even uninstalled the driver and rebooted and this has not done a thing to get the computer to acknowledge the drive, I am beginning to believe that the drive may be stuffed, I think it may be time to remove the side of the case and check connections for beginners and maybe buy a new drive, and to me would be a waste of money for the amount of time I would use the drive, maybe I could check eBay.

Can you believe that the old laptop is sitting beside me and ripping the files off of another DVD, I shouldn't crow to soon, have to wait and see if I can copy the files to USB after.

    Sorry for any misunderstandings foogoo.
